Queen 2015

I think a stamped bolster would be pretty nice way to round out that knife. I'm not knocking it as it is, that would just really be the icing on the cake.

I have one of the Railsplitters with Walnut covers that I recently picked up in the Exchange. I'm not sure if it's a late 2014 build or if it was made this year. Generally speaking, it's a well made knife. No blade play, no blade rub, good snap all around, and the blades had a good working edge on them.

It has some minor issues with the blade action but I got used to it in just a couple of days of carry. The tang on the Clip blade has sharp corners which make the action function almost as if it has a half stop. The Pen blade's action is gritty even after a flush and lube. The action on the Coping blade is normal.

The shield does not appear to be pinned.

Despite those minor issues, I'm delighted with the knife. I like how the Walnut covers on my version are unstained and in their natural state. All of the online photos I've seen suggest that most of the Walnut covers are stained to a darker color. I like the darker color too but I really like this natural look. It's the main reason why I bought this knife.

I believe that the shields are pinned on those - I had another one I had to send back since the shield pin was protruding in to the inside of the knife.

OK, thanks. Normally I can see the hole from the pin on the inside of the liner but I don't see one on this knife. I see the holes for the other pins but none for the shield. I'll have to assume that it is in fact, pinned but the hole doesn't go all the way through the liner. My eye site is not what it used to be so that might be a factor too.

Thanks for the info.

Sometimes the shield pin is flush with the brass liner - look inside with a strong light and you should see the nickel silver shield pin contrasting with the brass liner.

I know there is not a lot of material thickness there, but is it possible that the hole went through the cover and into the liner but not through it?

I did that just now and you're absolutely right. The pin is flush with the liner and I simply did not see it because I was looking for a hole like the other pins have.

This is good to know. Thanks you so much for your help.

Until the recent change of ownership Queen had a reputation for rather thick blade grinds and dull edges. Has this improved in the knives made after the change in ownership ? or still hit or miss ?
Are they still selling knives made during the former ownership ? If so, is there a way to tell which are the 'new ownership' knives ?

The recent run of #69 Barlows in 1095 have a nice thin edge. The more recently produced D2 Queens that I have sampled appear no different in edge thickness than older ones I have.

I just finished going through their 2015 catalog and all I can say is wow. I hope they are as nice as they appear. I'm really liking the Fisherman's Barlow.

There are two things that got my attention in their new catalog.
The first one is the use of walnut. As much as I like zebrawood, I prefer walnut by a long shot (almost as much as their old BEM). Unfortunately, so far none of the patterns offered in walnut works for me.
The second thing is their Q drop point hunter. I know it doesn't look too traditional as it is...yet removing the coating, forcing a patina, and putting some nice wooden scales on it could help it find a place in this subforum;)

I was told by a dealer that is a friend of the Daniels family that Queen has ran out of the Curly Zebra wood and couldn't source anymore. Kind of a bummer as that was my favorite wood they offered! I always wondered why no other makers used it but maybe it's just because they couldn't find a large enough supply either.

I just broke down and ordered a teardrop liner lock in walnut. I'll post when I get it.

I haven't liked any of the woods they have used since they discontinued cocobolo. The picture of the walnut was very dark and looked a lot like it. I hope I'm not disappointed if the color is very much lighter. Of course, as long as the rest of the knife is well made, I'll be happy.

There were a few nice surprises from 14 to the new 15 catalog. I like the drop point hunter, and some of the new bone handle options. If their quality is improved, I can see some collectors going for these knives.

Where are you seeing the teardrop liner lock in walnut? I don't see it in the 2015 product on Queen's factory website.
