There was a thread on quenching oils recently, and through peer pressure I'm looking to get Darren Ellis of Ellis Custom Knifeworks Darren Ellis of Ellis Custom Knifeworksto sell the stuff. Most quality quenching oils are only sold in huge quantities, and therefore would require Darren to purchase, store, transfer to smaller containers, and ship.

I believe Darren estimate the final costs at approximately $15 a gallon plus shipping.

I also believe that Heatbath was the oil mentioned, as well.

In order to spur interest, I decided to take it upon myself and start this thread. Mainly, because I'm a bully, but also because it might benefit us all!

Please respond to the poll, so Darren can determine if this is worth his time and effort!

I voted yes, because I think it's a great idea, but the answer is actually no, because I already bought a bunch from Heatbath last year. :D
But if I ever run out, I would get it from Darren.

I am working 5160-1084-1075-& O-1. Would this oil be appropriate?
Maybe he could take a barrell to The Blade Show and sell gallons out of his truck in the parking lot :-)
He and his wife are so very supportive of the knife making community, I hope he can profit from this!, if he decides to do it.

Definitely worth it. Parks 50 and AAA are two great oils.

I would definatly buy it from Darren. I have bought things in the past from him and would buy Oils from him.

I would definately buy from Darren... oil and any other supplies I need. No better place to buy, IMHO.:)

5160, O1 = Park AAA
1084, 1075 = Park #50

Those of you who bought any from me at the hammer- ins I need to let you know not to compare my prices to a quote Darren could come with. Darren is a straight shooter and you will do good with him. My reason for offering the oil was to get more of it into the hands of makers so that the pooh poohing of comercial quenchants would fade a bit, I have yet to talk to a person who has went to actual quench oils who wanted to go back to an alternative. Because if this I was not very concious of paying for much more than my costs. Shipping would be a serious consideration, location changes that for me.

I have done the math and if one can buy in 55 gallon drums this oil is not more expensive than any automotive product or vegitable oil bought in smaller quantities, but then you have to figure the shipping and the cost of the approved smaller containers, and other cost of doing bussiness. Keep all this in mind if Darren gives you a quote, and weight it against the numerable benefits.

We need to get out of this spend a dollar to save a dime mentality. Don't be so cheap. If somebody asks $50 for 5 gallons of really good quench oil (the main component in the operation that is the very heart and soul of the knife), and one gets say $200 for a typical hunter. Just one of your simpler knives could buy many years of worry free quenching, how is that not a bargain? :)

I paid 50$ for 5 gallons from kifeandgun.com. best 50$ ever...ill never go back to veggie oil and its really not much more expensive. I havent had a single hardening problem since. ive wanted to get 2 gallons of a few different types for a while now, but thats tough to do in the right quantities. my next test will be a few gallons of tough quench.

Im all for this...not enough small amounts are available to makers and I dont want a 55 gallon drum.

I have used tough quench for the last year. An excellent product.

I, also would never go back to trans fluid or the like.

I believe the market is there, once people understand the benefits from using a quality quenching oil. The expense is offset by the results you get.

Darrens a good man to deal with.

I've got Parks 50 but would support the cause with a Parks AAA (or equivalent) purchase.

I don't appear to be able to vote (didn't even realize my subscription was up, man how time flies!) but I'd definitely be interested as well.

Well is it really better than your standard oil that you would get at wallyworld. If it is better I would most certainty get it.

I didn't know wallyworld sold quenching oil. How much are they asking? :D

I would buy some. I hope parcel post could be offered for a slower cheaper shipping alternative. Thats my main concern living in Alaska.
