 Apparently I'm too much of a newb to take the poll but I would certainly buy some quench oil from Ellis Supply if I could get 5gal or less

While I'm all for getting some real quenchant, I don't want to ask Darren to take on any more than he wants to.

Darren,

If you decide to sell quenchant, and I haven't already ordered from K&G, I'm in. I just don't want to put you out.

Hey Deker!
I wouldn't do this without first knowing that Darren wanted to... in fact, he asked this question in a different thread, but it got lost in the rest of the posts. I mean, I'm a bully, but not THAT much of a bully!;) :D

No I mean like olive oil and the like.

Yup, real quenching oils can make a big difference, both in results as well as in consistency. Check the last few days of threads and you'll find a bunch of really good info on quenching oils.

I think only paying members can vote, Matt. Poll tax.

Excellent! Keep the peasants at bay!:D I'm kidding, you guys! Thanks for the heads up, Mike!

I paid 50$ for 5 gallons from kifeandgun.com. best 50$ ever...ill never go back to veggie oil and its really not much more expensive. I havent had a single hardening problem since. ive wanted to get 2 gallons of a few different types for a while now, but thats tough to do in the right quantities. my next test will be a few gallons of tough quench.

Im all for this...not enough small amounts are available to makers and I dont want a 55 gallon drum.

I also went with the 5 gallon bucket from knifeandgun.com a couple of years ago. David, do you, or does anyone else know what it is or equivalent to, or how many second oil it is? I've been curious, and have not had any problems that I can see yet. Thanks. -Matt-

Yes, I am in need of some oil and would buy it from Darren!

I recently ordered a ceramic platen from Ellis. I was extremely impressed with the speed of shipping. That simply does not happen without caring about your customers. Thank you Darren, and yes I would be interested.

I already have 3 gallons of Tough Quench but i am a bit worried with my W2 so I would definately buy 5 gallons of #50. I think that ther Tough Quench at 100F will handle my 5160 quenching needs unless it is TOO fast.....lol. As a matter of fact, I posted in the supplies for sale category trying to see if anyone had some. From the poll results, iti looks like Mr. Ellis has already pre-sold two barrels and has made a theoritcal dent in the 3rd one.....lol
Joe

So, I'm beginning to wonder! Seems like a fairly conclusive survey.
Somebody gonna buy a barrel(s) and make it available?

Hi All,

Looks like Matt's roped me into carrying quench oils! :) It's something I've been thinking about for a while, but wasn't sure what the demand would be, but it looks like this is something we should definitely pick up, so as soon as we get back in to Knoxville (We're over in North Carolina for a few days) I'll get right on this. Thanks Matt for posting this survey. :)

I'll post an update back in this thread once we get the order in to let everyone know they're on the way, and then again when they arrive and get repackaged. Thanks guys!

:)

Darren,
I think that a number of folks have maybe gotten religion lately about their quenchants, particularly since a lot of us have bought some steels that abosolutely require greater care and precision in the heat treat to even get marginal results. Where someone like YOU comes in is in aquiring the stuff that everyone wants, but nobody can get. That way we don't have to deal with the trolls at Heatbath and be continually rejected:D It seems that Brownells is the only provider that is actually interested in serving the needs of the "hobbyist" and unfortunately, they are a one trick pony when it comes to quenchant inventory. Now if you could manage to repackage the oil in 5 gallon METAL cans that could possibly sit on a hot plate and act as a cheapo quench tank........lol

Darren is great to deal with I would buy some with out a doubt.

thanks
spencer

Darren,

Hope you can get through the Heatbath maze. i was told they would only sell to those "in the industry". If you do get some put me on the list. i would rather buy it from you than deal with 55 gal drums. If Heatbath is a no go I have the number for the Houghton Rep in Ca. He can at least get you in touch with someone in your area. The people i spoke with at Houghton were all very helpful and curteous unlike heatbath.

Chuck

I was looking at somwe web sites and it appears that both Heatbath/Parks and Houghton make not only regular quenching oil but a couple of types of "marquenching" oils that work at temps from 250-450 with pretty high flash points. Got me thinking of a crazy idea I mention a while back. How about using an electric 28-32 qt turkey fryer with the higher temp marqueching oil in lieu of low temp salts? You avoid the whole gas flame issue and the corrosive properties of the salts and with the high flashpoint, i don't see that you would be doing anything more risky than quenching in regular oil. The only problem I see is that the electric fryer may only take you up to around 365-375F. I wonder if the heat of the blade itself would bump the temp up to the recommended 400F? Any thoughts?

Okay I put in the one dissenting vote, as I was thinking Darren sounded less than enthusiastic about the repackaging and distribution process before...
I could use some sometime in the future, so put me on the list, Darren, and change my vote to yes, making it unanimous...

After all I've read and conversations with Knife Makers in the "know", I would certainly buy quench oil from Darren. I've purchased forge building items from Darren in the past, and have been completely satisfied with the service I've received.

That being said, I've become a paying member, so that I could add my approval to the poll. Also, I can now post in "Around the Grinder" :D
