Raccoon

Get a mangy old hound cross dog and tie him up near the garbage can. In one week's time the coons won't be coming around anymore. I've got two such dogs and they made quick work of my coon problem.

I don't mean any offense but it would definitely be a good idea to run your plans by any adults in the household if you have not done so already.

Take away their food and they'll go somewhere else for an easy meal.

My cousin used a Desert Eagle .50 on the ones in his barn - I thought it was a little overkill....

if they're opening your trash can every night at 1 you know where to find them. sit out htre with your bubba'd 1022 and have at it. Careful though, most coons nowadays carry rabies.

I believe it's illegal in most places to use poison like that. Either way, do be careful. I once heard of a store owner (Arizona?) that put out rat poison to kill rats. A rat that ate it staggered around outside while dying. A hawk ate the dying rat and also died. The store owner was charged with killing the protected hawk.

im not going to use poison i wont them to die instantly

Lee Valley sells an effective trap. My 84 year old neighbor uses one.

If you choose to use antifreeze be very careful... dogs love the taste of it too.

Ive heard that if you put some food into a small necked bottle, they refuse to let go of their prize and will have the bottle stuck on their hand.
Ive never done this however.

Same story has been told about monkeys.

and crawfish. Unless your dog is a seasoned coon dog, don't risk it. two or three coons will easily take down a fully grown dog, even more aggressive breeds. I say sit out there at 1 in the morning when they play with your garbage cans. A lawn chair, a monopod and a 1022 will solve your problem. Then skin em :) they make great hats. Just be careful to wash your hands well.

If you're in town and using a gun is not an option, you could set some snares. The only problem is that you'll have to take care of the raccoons personally once they're caught. You really don't want to get too close, you want something with a little reach.

A frog gig on a pole would also work. Spear him down so he can't move, and then finish him with a baseball bat or shovel.
Note: if you take my advice, please don't post about it here.

Unless you're just up for killing coons (lots of good recipes around), instead of spending bucks on traps spend the money on a decent trash can they can't get into or build a shed for the cans.

I believe there might still be posts around from a guy who goes by the name of "Possum Hunter".
The guy would go after raccoons an opossums with a bowie knife. He found that a .22 inside a wheat/corn silo would penetrate and bounce around too much and wouldn't stop them fast enough. A cheap bowie solved his problem.

I can sympathize with you though. My grandmother tried to pay me to come over and kill all her raccoons when I was in high school. My parents wouldn't let me go do it.

BTW, in both my Ruger MkI and MkII a .22 short or CB round will feed if you only load 2. One in the chamber, one in the magazine.
Also, a child size (not a cricket) .22 can be found at a decent price. I bought mine for $60 a few years back. Those single feed .22's are fairly accurate for pest work and feed just about anything.

BTW, just be sure to clean up the chamber afterward AND have something to go to in case a .22 isn't big enough.

We have a fairly large population around our fish camp, they are good at making a big mess. They also work our muscadine grapes over pretty good, also. They will perch themselves on the vines and eat a ton of them in a night. When I was younger I would spotlight them and pop em with a .22. We sold the meat and hides. The meat was very popular with the local African-American population, although I did not care for it at all. Now days we live trap them and haul them across the river. Raccoons are intelligent and able to solve problems. I, personally, would rather try to relocate them than kill them. I know sometimes the only way to get rid of pests is to kill them, but if you have an option...

I have used both cb caps and traps. If you use a trap make sure you let them go where they won`t be someone elses problem. Racoons learn quick and once they have been trapped, they won`t go into a trap again. A 12 gauge works better if your neighbors don`t mind.

I don't believe a word of this. What stops the bullets after it goes thru the raccoon and then walls of the barn? -That is, if you can hit the raccoon in the first place.
