Raccoon

I was referring to the OP's raccoon tale. He placed bait in the trap even after everyone said that trap won't work. I think this is a tall tail.

Not a problem, I had been meaning to get the pictures back up. Using Photobucket now, it is so much easier for me. BTW: The trap I have now, electronically triggered has NEVER failed to catch. Bait has never been stolen. I contacted Have a Heart and they were not interested. Can not believe it, those coons are smart and will steal bait and never trip a standard cage.

They are smart. I love watching smart animals do stuff; it's so cool to see them solve a problem. It's a great reminder that we are not the only animals that think.

My favorite smart animals that I can regularly see around here are raccoons, otters, ravens/crows; cats.

At the fish camp we have a couple of large, submersible drums attached to winches, we lower them into the water and keep catfish or crawfish alive for few days while we run lines or traps, and then clean the catch all at one time. There are a couple of otters that have figured out that if they both get on one side of the drum, they can get the lid to slide to that side and they gain access to the trapped fish. They also seem to grab the bigger fish, and always leave the heads and backbones on the dock.

Im going poison the hell outta them . I tried to put the garbage in the garage but it stinks the whole basement up.

They will also drown dogs by luring them into a body of water, then holding their heads below water, and the dog can't fight back. I don't like racoons. Good luck with the poisoning or shooting, whichever you decide.

A large live trap is very easy to use, and quite effective. Your best bet though would be just to make sure your trash cans are effectively lidded, by attaching lids which fit tightly.

We keep a plastic storage box, like you get from Walmart, full of goat feed in a shed. The lid just fits down over the top, held closed with a cinder block. The coons have never figured that out.

If all else fails, just do this:

How many coons you killed

these bastards are smart & powerful.as a kid we hunted them with dogs.did'nt shoot em we climbed the tree tried to get them to jump to dogs.dogs killed them however one nite this big one whupped 3 dogs.we broke a big branch on him & he kept whupping up.out of respect we held dogs &let him go free.it's a weird fealing when they do'nt jump & decide to come down the branch & not jump.we just lowered our heads & let them pass over our body.no one was ever bitten.use havahart live traps, sardines for bait.take them to sticks& release.use a cord to pull cage door open & i strongly advise you to be real close to your vehicle so you can jump in if he's mad.remember they have claws & can come up your leg & work on upper body.

Some animal lovers are gonna freak...but here's what I did a while back: Rented a large Have-A-Heart trap. Caught the racoon which was ripping open my garbage every night...slipped a large plastic garbage bag over the trap...punched a hole on the closed end and duct tapped the open end to the exhaust pipe of my Honda. The coon went to sleep and then I buried him. I guess I could have relocated him. But I didn't.

That's actually a pretty painless quick and clean way to kill a coon. Better than drowning them.

I don't believe a word of this. What stops the bullets after it goes thru the raccoon and then walls of the barn? -That is, if you can hit the raccoon in the first place.

Fine, don't believe - but that is what he did.

As for the barn - hell, it's over 60 years old and only used to park one of his older tractors in; a couple of holes in the wall didn't concern him. As for his surroundings - his nearest neighbor is about 4 to 5 miles away. And once the bullet went through the wall, it would have gone landed in the corn fields that surround his house.

When I go visit in the Winter, I sometimes suffer a little agoraphobia as you can see from horizon to horizon, North to South and East to West.

I use a Have-a-heart, generally followed by a .22 CB to the cranium.

But I do not recommend meat or eggs for bait - unless you like getting sprayed by your neighbor's angry cat while you try to release it...

Bananas and peanut butter - works great for opossums too.

Also, if you encounter a 'learned' coon who has figured out how to avoid the pressure plate an option is to place a small log or large dowel under the trap. The idea is to place it so that that the entire trap will pivot just about when the critter tries to step over the plate to get at the bait - the extra motion startling it into making a mis-step.
