Wow - small world! My grandfather was also a master machinist - but at the Charleston Navy Yard. Before, during, and after WW2. He could make anything out of metal. Ships would come in for repair and need some oddball part and he would conjure it up. In 1940 he moved his entire family from Oklahoma to Charleston, SC for five cents an hour more in wages. He would make window screens and screen doors as a side hustle. A different era!Mine was a master machinist. (Many years at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.)
He used to build the coolest little inventions and contraptions that kept me mesmerized as a kid.
