Random Thought Thread

I haven’t touched my FK2 since I got it last weekend.

Went to the ft.worth gun show today. Mostly just to spend some time with my son. Bought not even a bottle of water. Lots of cheap ass knives, several custom makers. I guess I'm spoiled. Everone I compared to a cpk and everyone came up lacking. Not almost but to the point of thinking what a piece of shit. Thanks a pant load Nathan for ruining me, or is that making me see the light:)

I was just thinking to myself today of how many people Nathan has ruined with his superior knives.

ps. by 'ruined' I don't mean murdered. Just keeping things in context here

Once you are familiar with good knives, you recognize flaws quickly. I have seen custom knives in stores while traveling and cringed at the fit and finish including big gaps in the guard. Last November I was at a laguiole shop and thought it would be nice to buy one even if they were a little pricey. Every single one that the guy could hand me had some issue. I thought it was a fluke for the first few, but I eventually realized that I wasn't going to be happy with any of them. It still seems odd because I have a couple old ones at home that are fine.

That's a shame. I used to love going to that show and always saw a half dozen dealers selling good quality brands and several others selling good looking handmade knives. Granted, those were the days before I discovered CPK so maybe the selection never really was all that good.

Okay I'll say it here....

A 6 or 3 micron edge is great for everyday use... 1 micron or lower is just to flex dumb stuff like splitting hairs

I'm ready to hear different opinions but I use my stuff everyday and 1 micron is stupid in my use

I wouldn't necessarily say 'stupid', but I agree that a slightly toothy edge tends to work well for a wider variety of uses.

A micropolished edge is great for a straight razor, plane or chisel (and it's nice on something purely for slicing meat, like a Gyuto or Yanagiba), but for general use, it's just extra work with less benefit for the added effort. Law of diminishing returns.

Thank you!

I don't disagree!

But the medium I cut on a daily basis 1 micron edges seem to fade in effective sharpness faster

I'll go from thin plastic, to paper, to food regularly on an everyday basis an and 1 micron or lower fades fast in my use

In my use ... 400 venev and a 6 to 3 micron finish on a balsa strop have been fantastic to keep and use but I'm happy to hear others thoughts!

Thank you B bluemax_1 !

Yup. Especially when cutting harder materials (hard plastics, weathered nylon rope) etc., the super refined edges don't seem to bite as well as a slightly toothy edge, and dull more quickly.
