Further Notice by Philip Whalen

I can’t live in this world
And I refuse to kill myself
Or let you kill me

The dill plant lives, the airplane
My alarm clock, this ink
I won’t go away

I shall be myself–
Free, a genius, an embarassment
Like the Indian, the buffalo

Like Yellowstone National Park.

Nice. I read his thesis many years ago when I was visiting a friend at Reed. Gary Snyder’s and Lew Welch’s too. Always liked this one:

[I Saw Myself]

BY LEW WELCH
I saw myself
a ring of bone
in the clear stream
of all of it

and vowed,
always to be open to it
that all of it
might flow through

and then heard
“ring of bone” where
ring is what a

bell does

Cool. I used to have a nice little collection of those guys. I loved Lew.
