I accidentally played 'submarine' with my Mitsu 3000GT VR-4 once.
My good friend in high school bought an early 1980s Bronco with a built 302, tube bumpers made from very heavy pipe, and pretty much nothing else functional, for a couple hundred bucks. We took it bombing around logging trails and through streams and every time you went through a river you had to floor it for a couple minutes while the engine heat dried out the distributor cap. That was a fun summer.I accidentally played 'submarine' with my Mitsu 3000GT VR-4 once.
Was on the way home after a heavy thunderstorm, but it had mostly stopped raining, aside from a light drizzle, when I came across a section of road that had turned into a pool of water all the way across it. It looked about 30 yards to the other side. I stopped at the edge, trying to decide if it would be OK to drive through.
It wasn't flowing water, so at least I didn't have that to be concerned about, but try as I might, I couldn't recall how much of a dip the road had, right there.
Turning around and taking the other way home would've made the drive even longer. As I was pondering driving through, 2 cars pulled up behind me, and 2 pulled up and stopped at the edge of the water on the opposite side.
I thought, "I don't recall there being that much of a dip in the road. It can't be that deep", so I decide to go for it. Put it in 1st and pulled forward slowly.
The first few feet, I thought I was OK, as the car made bow waves like the photo above. Then the water got deeper and washed up over the hood, over the windshield and over the roof (it had the glass sunroof, fortunately, closed tight. I looked up and saw the wave of water flow over the sunroof).
I knew if I stopped, I would be stuck. If the rpms dropped, I'd be stuck, so I kept the rpms steady and hoped for the best, and within a few seconds, came out the other side with water streaming off the car.
As I turned on the wipers, I looked in the mirror and saw all the other vehicles go, "NOPE..." and turn around.
Amazingly, no water got past the door seals into the cabin. The water never reached the intake, so no hydrolock or any kind of damage.
I DID end up taking longer to get home as I drove around another ~15 minutes to make sure the engine's heat dried anything that might've gotten wet, and the next day, I found grass on the sunroof, front and rear windshield wipers, rear spoiler...
Would've been great to get video of it. It probably looked like the Lotus Esprit emerging from the ocean in the 007 movie![]()
Today...luckyI don't think that any one has mentioned this before, but the most recent white box from the Mothership which I received today has the CPK logo ink stamped inside. This is really cool and a very nicely done touch. Kudos to whoever that came up with it![]()

Pictures or it didn't happen Mat!Yes, I feel very privileged and very fortunate indeed. This last box was the very last of the DEF2 preorders. Nathan and Jo ought to be very proud of these gorgeous technical pieces as I am, the very proud owner of 2 of the nicest CPKs which I have ever received and I am no spring chicken when it comes to CPKs! Honestly one of these DEF2s could easily be one of ONEMay have to share a pic of two one of these days
ETA: also honorable shout out to Mark who did the vertical satin grind finishes![]()
