Random Thought Thread

Was writing this up in a different thread but it's a bit of a random thought so figured it would be best here.
I greatly admire you CPK collectors - your collections are really impressive and it's fun to see all the different variants and such on any given model all in one place. I collect "old man knives", I'm afraid, so from a collector's standpoint, I get it.

I've always looked at CPKs as tools, the finest tools in their niche. I'm a big advocate of not only having the right tool for the job but also having the best. CPKs meet (exceed even) those standards and nothing makes me prouder than to have a CPK on my belt or in my hands doing some work. It's hard for me to get into that collector's mindset with regards to these tools though. I mean, I don't collect Klein screwdrivers, Stiletto hammers, or Snap-on wrenches - I sure as hell amass them though 😁.

I will continue to live vicariously through the collectors here - it's always a pleasure to see your knives. I'll keep adding, one at a time, to my modest assortment - oh and holding out hope for another chopper down the line ('tis the one category that hasn't been filled in my CPK lineup yet).

Dylan, those aren't old man knives. Those are collector knives. (IMHO.)

Old man knives were what my late grandfather gave me in the late 1950's and early 60's from his pocket before he passed. (Yes, they have features in common.) But those old knives were from Imperial, Camillus, Hammer Brand, Utica, NY Knife Co etc. (And I haven't a one anymore. Lost through holes in pockets, playing stickball and football in the streets as a kid.)

I do have his pocket watch and mandolin and some of his tools...but none of his knives. (Though a great many memories.)

I call them (lovingly) "old man knives" as that's the moniker that the lads at the Becker Gatherings gave them. I bring my slip joints and they are pretty out of place amidst the Busses, the Beckers, the Esees, and the axes. They sure like to look at them though - even whilst poking fun 😁.

I have some of my late dad's knives, though not many - I can certainly understand the distinction.

Here's a couple of "old man" knives I was gifted here over the years...carried by members of the greatest generation during WWII...whether in action or not, I cannot say.

Imperial, started by a couple of Italian immigrants back in the day, made many, along with other companies, to support the troops going into harm's way.

Dylan, I completely understood and took for granted that you not only knew the difference, but revered it as well.

It is important to appreciate our history...whether through cutlery or other means. Some get it. Others don't. You do.

I imagine you and I could jaw on and on about these fine knives and the associated histories. Pity that we live on opposite ends of the country.

Well, I hope to not be going anywhere for quite a while yet...so who knows what fate has in store?

Or even the post office, if it comes to that.

I'm happy to share pix with you anytime. My collection is not as interesting as many, but it's still pretty nice...more so on the custom side than production, but I have plenty of those as well.

Good to hear! I'm glad everything turned out well.
Thanks. Fingers crossed. They thought it was pancreatitis but the blood test seemed to disprove that. You can see where her foreleg was shaved to put in the IV line to hydrate her. At this point, it's idiopathic as they don't know what caused it.

Dang. 136 people claimed “in” on the poll.

Are you limiting the number to avoid potential hang ups like the K18?
E.g., heat treat, sharpening, etc?

I am limiting the number because the material is already bought and paid for. There is an existing constrained size in place already.

Oh, OK I'm glad you mentioned this. Now I can just tell myself I couldn't get one because they were sold out. Somehow that's easier to swallow than saying "I guess diapers and baby food take priority right now."

That is unless you're willing to trade for a first born...😉
