Random Thought Thread

Sooooooooo thought. Most CPK buyers are users. MOST.

So is there a market demand for wood handles?

I have a few FK's in wood handles, thinking about selling 1-2 of them. But I can't decide.

Would anyone who was strictly using a CPK value a wood handle? Maybe so as it is epoxy sealed to the tang, but less inherent grip that something like micarta....

HMMMMMM!

Edit: Man that is an awful photo.

If those were my FKs, I would keep them in my possession as follows:

A- Middle

B- Top

C- Bottom

I'm not a big fan of the very light colored woods but although I really like the top one, the middle one is the woodsiest of them all. You will not have ANY problems selling off any one of them if you should decide to thin out the herd and to spread the lurve!

Top is Macassar Ebony, Middle is Stabilized Pecan, bottom is stabilized Maple. Here is a pic from the sale Nathan did.

I know they would sell, that's not what I mean, I mean, would people who are just users look up, or down at wood?

I'm trying to broaden my horizons here, know what I mean?

Well Justin, I can honestly say that I would definitely use a wood handled FK if I had one. My main EDC is a walnut handled Lone Wolf T2 (the one in the middle), and as you can see from the picture, that knife gets carried and used. As far as I am concerned, NOTHING feels better than wood handles. Not bone, not antler, not Terotuf, not even micarta (which is number two in my book). (Actually, I might prefer ivory, but ivory is pretty dear these days)

But, speaking for myself, when it comes to rare knives with unusual handles, it is hard to fathom mussing the handles if they cost way over retail. And your wood handled FK can certainly sell for way over the original price. If I had bought my T2 for what they CAN go for, I probably would have never been willing to use it. But a guy sold it to me for not much over the original retail, and I have used the heck out it, and plan to do so for years to come.

I guess what I am trying to say, is price matters. Wood is great for a user, but if you buy at collector's prices it is hard to treat a knife as a user. Just my two cents.

I'd use it but then again, one of my favorite users has a stag handle which imo is one of the least durable materials out there. It's nice using something that looks cool. I'd definitely use a wooden handled CPK. Was thinking of getting some scales fit. Especially because I have a nice set of lignum vitae slabs.

Just some random, thoughts associated with wood handles JustinFournier JustinFournier

I come from the school of thought that says the grip comes from the shape of the handle, predominately, then the surface texture. Potato / potato.

Whenever I post photos, I get a fair few requests for replacement scales in the exotic woods. There is an interest/desire for them.

I shoot all my 1911s and eventually use all my knives with smooth wood handles. None of what I do is down in the dirt, hard use, but they are all absolutely serviceable with wood handles.

Mankind has been strapping wood to sharp things for a looong time and calling it a knife. It works.

All of the above is to say that if you do pass any of those along they will put up with good solid use and look good doing it.

Got a new HK45C on its way home. Apparently HK doesn’t like us to be able to use lights as I can only mount a Veridian or TLR to it. If I want to mount a Surefire of any kind I have to modify the pistol and/or the light somehow. And since the 45c doesn’t accept the Surefires, nobody makes a holster for one with the XC I want to mount to it.

Killing me.

In my view the handle shape is the most important element in developing a good grip on a knife. Followed by the coefficient of friction between your hand and that material. Some materials like glass and most plastic are inherently slippery While others like rubber and Micarta are inherently grippy. Texture comes last.

A well shaped and well textured glass reinforced nylon or polypropylene handle will be functional but will never be optimal.

Wood, Micarta and TT all have some pretty nice properties.

Well that’s some BS.

My friend’s HK45 is one of my all time favorites to shoot but I never noticed it was light biased.
It’s an older USP compact with a stainless slide so I doubt that adding a light or laser has crossed his mind.

Hopefully it’ll turn out to be a solid shooter for you.

The USP is the older version. The HK45 is a completely different model. The HK45C (compact) is the one that is limited for light options. I have the full-size HK45 with a Surefire X400 on it, great setup!

I’ll have to see if the local range has one of these to test out.

The HK45C is a great gun. I traded mine for the full size a few years ago but I've been thinking of replacing it. Can't go wrong with an HK. I'm kind of holding out for a striker fired .45 though. If they make a VP-45 I'd be over the top. Love the VP-9!

I’ve got a P30 9 in V3. I’m not a striker fired pistol kinda guy. I’d love a P30 .45 because the spider man grip is phenomenal.
