Random Thought Thread

Tried to recommend my favorite backwoods lighter and discovered that it's discontinued 😔

The Trekker Stormproof butane lighter. Mine's a little over 10 years old. UST bought over the design (company?) right about that time (Originally designed and made by a small indie company. ***sucks that they bought the design/company, then discontinued it years later ☹️).

Whoever designed it, put a lot of thought into it. Orange rubber armor with a dual lock water resistant cap (that was also rubber armored), but it was designed so you could operate it 1-handed (and even with thinner gloves on).

Mine is really grimy, but it still lights up first time, every time, and it's a jet lighter, so far more windproof than most. Some years, when I haven't had the chance to go backpacking, the lighter's been left in my pack for ~18 (?) months, and still had fuel and lit on the first try (followed the recommendations to only fill it with ultra refined butane. I used Vector Quintuple refined butane).

Looks like ebay is the only remaining place to find them if anyone is looking for a solid, reliable lighter.

P.S.
Anyone at high altitudes probably knows butane isn't very reliable above ~10,000 feet. I've used mine in the cold before. I just keep it in my jacket, so it doesn't get super cold (where butane lighters also don't work as well).
Heads up, if anyone IS looking for a really good backwoods lighter, I just got confirmation from this website that they managed to snag a bunch of these and do have them in stock.

They aren't particularly cheap at $48.xx, but I wound up ordering a spare in case something happens to my old one.

A websearch for 'Windmill Trekker lighter' should pull it up.

Before buying the Exotac lighter I did some reading on them and watched some YouTube videos where I saw many comments suggesting to just buy a Bic and calling it good. I guess Exotac wants people to see for themselves if their lighter is any better because they included a Bic lighter in the box! Not many companies will send you a competitors product!

I haven‘t had many issues at all with Bics over the years, but I will say that these long stem versions suck.

I grabbed one and am looking forward to trying it out. Need to buy fluid today……Come to think of it, better grab stogies and whiskey, also .😋

Anybody looking for a reasonably priced set of bluetooth headphones for themselves or as a gift, I've been pretty impressed with these. I picked up a pair recently for use with my iPhone and they pair easily, have good sound and get a top buy from Wirecutter for under $100 cans. They're currently $45 at amazon and that's a few bucks under what I paid recently. (Since they are not a site supporter, no direct link supplied, but this the info)

Soundcore Anker Life Q20 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, Wireless Over Ear Bluetooth Headphones.

They will play for 60 hours on a charge if you turn off noise cancelling, or 40 hours with cancelling on. Comes with the charging cable with mini USB jack.

Yep, daughters both just confirmed it’s an excellent product and at a fantastic price too. Thanks Blues 👍

I have had a couple of these for many years. Probably my favorite lighters. Have one in each of my bags and one that goes with my anytime I'm out wandering in the woods.

My SDFK arrived 20 minutes ago (4 days later than tracking stated expected), and I love it. Perfect size for a do-pretty-much-everything knife at my place in the woods.
We just got 16+ inches of snow a couple of days ago, and supposed to get 12-16 more in next couple of days, so after I deal with it I will take this beautiful new blade on the trail with me to the cabin for more snow removal and chores.
Was negative 18 at cabin and -6 at the house this morning. Crazy swings in weather.

Retired UPS Driver Retired UPS Driver

Back in the day, we used to borrow the use of a UPS truck and one of our agents would don the uniform and drive the truck so that we could deliver quantities of morphine, heroin or cocaine, (which had been discovered within shipments), to unsuspecting traffickers who were unaware that their consignments had been compromised.

Then we'd give them enough time to get into their parcels before taking the door and ruining their day.

It was so much fun. And we got paid to do it, too.

Glad I was able to return the favor. LOL.
