So, from reading a bunch of vet sites, it seems that lipomas (up to the sizes of oranges) are common in the rib area of dogs, especially as they age, and are completely benign, painless, and rarely cause issues. So, that's something to hope for. Fingers crossed.
Hoping for the best, Elliott. My old man golden has a couple of hard lumps on his rib cage too and a few fatty cysts around his neck. We get them checked and drained periodically but they are otherwise benign.
