Random Thought Thread

Just my opinion, but consider barrel length, choke, and probable distances you may encounter. I recommend people get a variety of ammo to shoot so they know how it groups. Smaller birdshot like 6 or 7 1/2 can be devastating at close range (typical in home ranges) but do lose penetration pretty quickly. I load home defense shotguns with 00 Buck and cabin defense with slugs (for four legged intruders with claws/teeth). Something people frequently don’t think about is what an intruder may be wearing, and thick winter coats can absorb quite a bit.
I do a lot of bird hunting and use shot from BB (goose) to #6 (pheasant). I wouldn't using bird shot for home defense.
I was basing my opinion off of a close range test Paul Harrell did on his "meat targets" and they worked well. I don't know personally as I've never blasted anyone with a shotgun from less than 15 yds or so.

The "bud break" (1st buds on the vines) at the Home Ranch vineyard at the Steven Kent Winery in Livermore, CA.

The wine maker, Steven MIrassou, says it looks good for this year's crop despite of the heavy rain to date. :)

Spent over $400 on wine that was "on sale" at a Member's Event there yesterday.

Decided to stop buying any more knives but there's ALWAYS something else to spend $ on. ;)

I don't think anyone wants to get hit with any kind of shotgun blast, but I've shot ducks with #3 shot at less than 20 yards and they dropped in the water, only to start swimming away. Sea ducks are even more notoriously tough. My friend hit a Bufflehead that looked like it dropped dead when it hit the water. I walked over to grab it and I ended up chasing it for about 50 yards. The duck had a hole through it's breast, but somehow still was alive.

I'm sure others can tell similar stories of shooting geese with BB or other shot. Not something I would want to bet on for home defense.
