Random Thought Thread

I assumed you were going for all round.

I do know the power of slugs and buckshot. too powerful for in the house.

I'm here late for the discussion, and probably haven't seen/read all the responses. However, in a past life, I trained with a few well-known and well-respected "firearms" folks. (*I know..."Who cares?")

That being posted, #4 Buckshot (*not to be mistaken with #4 shot) was pretty well-liked for home defense. Like any 12-gauge round, it's a brute on soft targets, but is reported to be a lot less likely to over-penetrate in a home/building/CQB environment, when compared to 00 Buck or a slug.

If I remember correctly, #4 Buck has about 20-25 "BBs" that are just under a quarter-inch in diameter, versus the nine or so "BBs" in 00 Buck, which are just under the size of .38/9MM round.

Just thought I'd share. Feel free to flame me to death if I'm sharing bad info.

EDIT- If you're just going through the e-mails of the online retailers you normally buy from, it can be hard to find. However, if you use a dedicated ammo site, like "Ammoseek" or the like, it's (*normally) pretty readily available. Happy hunting...

I did the same thing a few months ago. I had a new system installed last year and had no idea I needed to clean the filter out once in a while.

Toilets started to flush really slowly. Called the septic guy to pump it and he showed me what to do. That guy just reached into the waste water with bare hands and grabbed the filter out. I'm 100% certain that he is immune to Covid and every other disease out there.
The filter (Tuf-Tite) says it needs to be pulled and cleaned every three years but I don't buy it. (We learned early on that a clogged filter could mean backflow into the basement tub or around the basement commode. Got off relatively easy.)

I went from checking it quarterly, to semi-annually and, the last few years, annually.

I use these...from Lee Valley tools:

It's been quite a while since most circles, (including LE), recommended #4 Buck for home defense. But anything is good if that's what you got.

There was a time when we were issued it, (along with slugs and 00), in the middle to late 80's...but I don't think it lasted much longer with any of the agencies I was associated or worked with.

I think I still have some boxes downstairs.

ETA: Yep, I have some Winchester #4 Buck from before, (what's left of), my hair was gray.

I was think shoulder to hip ratio looks correct for a woman, but…

So, I had the 5th anniversary of my first CPK a few days ago! 😎 Technically my first was my HDFK pre-order (delivered in December), but the following week I scored a EDC2 in a Friday sale, which was delivered first. Pics of those 2 firsts (got 2 sets of scales for the EDC, you don't see the multi-color G10 too often)!

Yeah.

To folks considering it; #4 doesn't meet FBI penetration specs.

Does ammo always NEED to meet those penetration specs? It can potentially still do the job at very close range, but the reason for the penetration in 10% ballistics gel, is for tougher shots, eg. bigger person, thick clothing, side shot through an arm etc.

LE definitely found it lacking, as they might have to take shots anywhere out to 30 yards or more.

For use inside the home, #4 might do the job out to 10-15 feet, but may not effectively stop a threat immediately at 30 feet or more, on one of those tougher shots, whereas 00 and #1 (the smallest buckshot load that still meets the penetration specs), and slugs, have all proven to be one of the most effective one-shot stoppers with a center of mass hit (even more effective than many rifle calibers).

Shit...
Tanks for the reminder
I'd prefer to be associated with a different memory, but if that's what you got...

...you gotta go with it.

(I on the other hand will be thanking you this evening as I celebrate the opening of the Rangers' playoffs with some Bourbon. Or, if things don't go well, maybe more than some.)

Good luck to yer Rangers!

I’ve taken coyotes and fox out to 50yards or so with it and rolled them right over, I certainly wouldn’t wanna get hit with it! We ran dogs so the shots were always ranging and over time we all found 12gauge #4 buck through a turkey choke was the most consistent at putting the chases to an end with the most versatility in our hunting spots.

This is the 870 that sleeps with me and my two furry terrorists every night...

It's loaded with #4 Buck...and the longest hallway (*in the house that we reside in) is 48'/16 yards, wall-to-wall.

Despite the "Experts" at the "Forever Being Incompetent", I certainly don't feel under-armed.

As you stated, I sure as hell wouldn't want to get hit with #4 Buck at that distance.

Funny. My "bed-gun" looks similar but is loaded with 308 LE - just have to make sure I don't shoot at the upstairs wall in the neighbor's direction.

Quite accurate at long distance too, actually.

It works well (and is intended for use on) smaller animals. Note that it generally isn't recommended for deer sized targets (which range a little closer in size to humans).

More than a few people who've failed to recover deer after hitting them with #4 (or needing multiple hits).

As for overpenetration concerns for HD use, a missed shot is still going to punch through drywall.

As far as not wanting to get shot with it; I submit that I wouldn't want to get shot with ANY firearm, including some of the .22 pellet rifles available (which have occasionally penetrated deeply enough to kill someone). Doesn't mean a .22 pellet rifle is an ideal HD option.

When it comes to HD, my primary focus is stopping any threat inside the home, as effectively/expediently as possible. I understand the concept of knowing what's beyond my target, and I want the best chance of a home invader not getting a shot off.

Different strokes, for different folks.

P.S.
I really, really hate the autocorrect on this damned S22 Ultra. It arbitrarily capitalizes or decapitalizes (is that a word?) correctly spelled words, and arbitrarily substitutes correctly spelled words with whatever the Artificial Idiocy thinks might be an option (despite the words not even being close in meaning). 😠

Yeah. I'm also still getting the random crashing (not always), ONLY on Bladeforums.

I upgraded from my S8, because the old battery swelled enough to pop the case back off, AND Samsung had a deal with exchange that knocked quite a bit off.

Checked a month or two ago, and exchanging this POS for an S23 Ultra (to see if THAT one is any better), doesn't get anywhere near the discount. 🤬

This is turning out to be a poop thread. Not my fault! I also installed bidets in all of my bathrooms, so that cut down on the clogs too.

I use this to pull the filter out and put it back. A lot easier.
