Random Thought Thread

Felt sorry for the little guy, but in the house, especially in the bedroom, is off limits, no exceptions.

Thought about turning him in for rabies testing, but he didn’t bite us and no fluids were leaked out.

Waited till after sunrise & breakfast for a picture, then buried him in the garden.

Never did figure out how he got in.
Sounds like you didn't follow the rule.

I’ll up you one.

Last May the cat and I were rudely woken up 4am ish by a mad flying ruckus going on in the bedroom. She goes into full attack mode in the dark and my immediate thought was it was a bird, but it was way too early yet.

Shook my head and eyes awake and realized it was a bat, just by the sound of its wings and high pitch echo location it was making.

Grabbed a short handled fish net and caught him mid air as he was flying in circles looking for an escape route away from the cat.

The Glock would have been overkill and a poor choice, so the UF2 was right there and put into action. A butt end thump to the brain stem ended it instantly.

Just an fyi. You might consider deleting the post as they are a protected species no matter how nasty they appear. They are gross when they get inside a dwelling and start peeing/pooping.

I don't think self defense would apply to their protection.....lol

Or do we need to move this to Prac Tac?
😂😂😂

Maybe under Vamp-Tac! 🤣
I only mentioned it because I know someone who got fined for killing one in their home. They ended up having quite the hassle with having to hire a bat-trapper to remove the others alive from the attic area.

If the regs were coming down on me Hard...?

I'd just burn the whole house down! Lol

Love that story 😁 I can relate a bit.

In 2009 I inherited my grandfathers home. It was originally built in the late 1700's, a part of the western reserve land snatch. Very old, and breezy.

When I was going through his things, one oddball item really stood out. I couldn't for the life of me figure why my gramps had a tennis racket in his bedroom by the bed, he was 80 and not a sports enthusiast.

Well...I found out real quick🤣.
Second night in, woke up in the middle of the night to something tickling my nose...

Gotta be careful with bats. Only vampire bats drink blood, but most of them carry viruses.

It has to do with their immune system (and why virology research into bats, is a thing. If we can understand how bats tolerate very high viral loads without their immune systems going into overdrive, and replicate that in humans, it has the potential for a lot of applications).

Max, have there been any known recent cases?

What? Too soon?!

The number of foxes from up near the North Slope area here with rabies is amazing.

I welcome them around the outside, they are a fantastic natural mosquito killer. I even hang up bat houses for them up north on my hunting property to encourage their congregation and habitation near me. Watch them each night here in the twilight, picking off hundreds of flying bugs and earning their keep.

Grew up with them living inside the walls and ceiling at my Gramps house too, squealing and hearing their claws scratching while they climbed up and around inside the walls every night except wintertime. Almost weekly we had to take care of one or two that found its way into the house.

But around here where I live, rabies in them is a very common occurrence, with numerous cases reported each year. Just couldn’t take that chance.

I’m a big time hunter and outdoorsman and have a phenomenal respect for all our natural and domestic wildlife and the environment. But I do draw the line at any bedroom invader, especially one that has the potential to be carrying rabies.

Even though Moose & Bears are protected out of season in your neck of the woods, if a stray one popped into your bedroom while you were sleeping, you would be well within your rights to take what you felt was appropriate action too.

I’ve seen first hand a person dying of Rabies while in rural China, it’s not pleasant, and I’ve had 2 relatives go through the Rabies shots series, no thanks.

I do thank you though for your thoughts, long live CPK’s and cold beer, Ganbei🍺

Please know I was not berating your action- only cautioning about social media post.

BTW did any of you see any footage of the moose in the hospital lobby here, or the young one that wandered into the movie theater and ate popcorn in Kenai?

A Native elder had to kill a polar bear a couple of years ago that was under a home trying to get in from underneath it. He lives at the northernmost village and it is a different world there. I love that he shares his adventures and photos.

Stay safe!

Yes, I did see on TV, I believe a Nat Geo Documentary about that Polar Bear under the house last year. That’s pretty scary, and up around Churchill it’s life or death just walking home.

Missed the Kenai popcorn eating, but I’m sure it’s posted online somewhere and I’ll be sure to check it out. Moose are/can be downright dangerous, no doubt about it.

Hey, no offense taken at all, I know you were just watching out for me and giving an honest heads up, appreciate it brother👍.

Stay safe always, careful too!

Don't all losing championship teams which fail in their bid to win the SB, NBA finals, WS, etc... Their "champion" hats, jerseys and other merch end up in places like Zamunda in Af? I'd wager that the paramilitaries in Zamunda will be proudly donning blues in unmarked Magnacut steel. I have already found evidence of my claim:
