At these prices . . . people MUST be producing counterfeit bottles. Right? I haven't heard or read anything like that, but at these insane prices SOMEONE has to have decided to forge some labels and pour some Jim Beam in a bottle and pawn it off as Pappy. The potential profit is huge. I mean, like bigger than coke, crack, or fentanyl huge. How could the Chinese possibly pass that up? There is no WAY I would trust buying any of this over Al Gore's Interwebs.

My most expensive bottles are several bottles of the Hakushu and Yamazaki, maybe worth $200 each now - price has doubled in the past few years.
That's good stuff. I have a couple of bottles of Hibiki 17 and Yamazaki 12. The Yamazaki seems to be going in the price range you mention. Which is still very high, IMO. But if you search for Hibiki 17 . . . sit down first. Even though it's a blend. More insanity.

FWIW, my oldest whisky is an aged 36 years private label single malt Scotch which I received a couple of bottles as a gift. Sublime!

My all-time favorite whisky was a $25 private label bottle of "vatted malt whisky" which I bought at a DC liquor store about 20 years ago. I bought two bottles. Never saw it again. I wish I had purchased the entire stock. Better than Macallan 25 (never had the 30). Better than anything I've ever had. I still dream of those bottles. The guy who runs the store and I have discussed it several times and he shares my love and fond remembrance of it. Now THAT I would pay $200 for a bottle. And not blink.

Try Miyagikyo - that stuff is fantastic, and was like $120 a bottle. I have some Hibiki in the nice decanter, and it was like $70-80 and doesn't state an age. I have about 8 others, and Hatozaki is a good cheap $40 Japanese whisky with almost a rice grain flavor to it. Nikka Coffey Still Whisky is pretty good, but it does bite the tongue - I still like it more than the Nikka Taketsura pure malt.

I'm still bored, so expect...............

So I'm home alone... was just on a group call with some friends... don't know what channel or show was on the TV when I looked up.. but it showed a penguin sliding down an icy hill

I mentioned to my friends "I wonder what I could cover myself with to make it the furthest down my hallway...."

I'm in the garage looking at a yard stick and some synthetic oil......

Part off me says "my wife will kill me"....... but the other part is saying "this is for science"

....... must resist the urge.... must resist.......

I have a bottle of MacAllan 12 in the cabinet that will be 25 before I finish it. 🤣 I prefer the peatier stuff.
Lol. Again, I'm Old Man, but 20 years ago that was my go-to, but something changed and it's not all that good anymore. The 18 is still great, pero muy espensivo. So now when I'm slumming it's Highland Park 12, Springbank 10, Balvanie Double Wood, or even Johnny Walker Green.

I'm guessing you like Lagavulin and Laphroig. I could never get into the peatier stuff. I like my whisky sherried.

Laphroaig is my primary single malt. These days the "Cask Strength" 10 year old.

I also like the Balvenie Double Wood as well.

We have a bottle of Johnny Walker "Blue" we brought back from a niece's wedding...and imho it's dreadful. (My wife hates it too.)

Oh, and I thought I was the "old man" around here.

You're young at heart.
