Random Thought Thread

"Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will Philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders."

You know, I haven't thought of this since the last century, but I remember when Baz Luhrmann recorded this as this spoken word song that was a surprise hit the year I finished middle school. It was interesting to hear it then and then forget about it for nearly a quarter century and hear it again.

It will seem a lot quieter when it’s running when you actually need it because it will be sound of pouring rain, howling wind or ext. will drown it out.
ETA: I didn’t realize how far behind I was on the thread. Slow response.
Just a small note;

My experience has been the opposite. Any time we've ever really needed generators/backup power, it's noticeable because of how quiet the area is with the power out.

The power might get knocked out when it's windy/ stormy (Yup, that Derecho a few years ago, knocked the power out with all the trees and branches it brought down everywhere), but most folks aren't too terribly inconvenienced by a power outage for a few hours.

It's when it takes a few days to fix the lines and restore power, that it starts to be an issue. For as far back as I can recall (power outages when I was a kid), the sound of the few generators running in an area that was silent, was always something notable (my dad would go and grab one of the gennies from his company).

I remember when I was ~7-8, that on the entire block, there was only one other house in that suburb that had a generator running.

It's one of the reasons I sprung for the more expensive inverter type portable generators. They're SO much more quiet than the old style gennies my dad had.

My random thought is that one reason I really love CPK is because this is one of the most active subforums on BF. I've been on BF for closing on 20 years. I was a freshman in college when I joined. I've seen a lot of makers come and go, and I've mainly seen bulletin board forums go the way of the dinosaur, and I've kind of joined them. Can't afford to buy new knives all the time, so it's nice to have a super active, friendly community to at least talk about them all the time.
Yup. I mention it every so often; I Originally came for the knives. I stayed because of the community here (and more knives 😅).

They are mostly younger, but it’s contagious to the older generations as well…
Agreed. Seems like people in general have become complacent and lazy.

Something along the lines of: Difficult times create strong people, strong people create easier times, easier times create weak people, weak people create difficult times.

We've been prosperous and had easier times for a long period. Might be time to pay the piper.

Everything goes in cycles

Yeah. I get it (including the exasperation with folks). What bums me out, is that it generally means you're officially old 😪

Every older generation has complained about the younger generation being lazy, complained about how music was so much better "back in the day", and the new music of the current times, suck etc.

Is it simply nostalgia and changing perspectives, though? I don't think so. Society itself seems to have been changing, and not necessarily for the better.

I can recall when there only used to be trophies/awards for 1st, (and 2nd, and 3rd for sports). I personally found it a motivator to push harder to excel. There was a sense of accomplishment, from being rewarded/acknowledged for all that effort. Trophies for 18th place? Participation trophies? All those seem to do is breed complacency.

Look at what they continue trying to do with schooling. They seem to keep dumbing things down, and lowering standards, all supposedly so everyone can feel good about themselves regardless.

I saw this meme, and it struck a chord

If this is crossing the line of "too political", I'm OK with modding/deleting it.

It's just an observation, and how I'm seeing things play out.

I'm not planning on becoming an old man. Just a twenty or thirty-something in an eventually worn out carcass.

(Yeah, avoiding going down the political rabbit hole is probably a good idea before it grabs a foothold. We can leave the whole DEI thing for another venue.)

Should I delete that part?

Being in my late 60’s and having a father from “the greatest generation “ , I can attest to the whole society going downhill and kids IN GENERAL, being lazier. And I think some of it is due to the fruits of their success. They fought and scraped to give us a better life and it’s been a snowball of easier, faster and “my rights” ever since. No idea how to get back to where we need to be though, just observation.

I think us old SOBs should do our best to share the lessons we've learned along the way...and let those who come after us find their own way, with whatever they feel is useful they may have picked up from us. (Just as we did before them.)

One man, one vote is a great system...it's not perfect. But it's the best one so far.

These young soft losers are the product of all of our "culture-making" institutions--schools, corporations, media conglomerates--having been taken over by people who are either actively working to destroy America or are weirdo losers, "useful idiots," who just hate everyone and want to stop feeling left out, and they conveniently advance the first group's agenda.

I also think this new babyshit generation coincides with the anti-bullying campaigns. Certainly, empirically, it seems that bullying has long served an important social purpose and we are seeing the consequences of eradicating that learning process.

When nothing is "real" and everything is changeable / negotiable either via mental gymnastics or artificial means, is any of it a surprise anymore?

Darwin would drop over dead from laughing until he choked.

I do agree with you. Was just trying to lighten the mood with a fun song ...

That being said, this is how I look at it: My daughters are in their late 20s/early 30s. It's really theirs to deal with, all I can do is trying to continue influencing them in the right direction (not that I have been very successful so far). Also, I'm glad they are not in school anymore.

The biggest change to society in the last few years, IMO, is social media. And then there was the pandemic .... Then again, only a minority participates in social media, and the changes you mention and effects of the pandemic were not the same across the US.

I'll retire soon, hopefully, and everybody woke, active on social media, etc. (BF excluded), can go scr*w themselves. :) There is some peace in not having to worry about little kids anymore, and "fly-over" country is great !

And it's mileage, not age that matters :) (not that I'm doing well in the mileage department, either 🤣).

Roland.

How do you not beat the you know what out of your 5 year old? It’s real hard, I want to back hand him across the room sometimes.

Random thought, I’m sick and tired of the younger generation. None of them can listen, do as they are told, and even show up to work on time/early. I shouldn’t be having to do everything all the time with my title, but someone’s got to do it.
Friendly suggestion, try not to let the work frustration follow you home. Hitting the gym can help a lot. Me and my son did our back day at the gym this morning and now I'm almost ready to be nice to someone...

We had an ice storm that took out power for a few days in our town and some neighboring towns. you can definitely hear a generator running once this settle down. I planted some arborvitae around the area of the generator it help with the noise. But the most telling is after dark we drove to check on the oldest lives in a different town but as we turned into his street we knew they were ok the only house with lights on. He had our old generator hook up and running with the main breaker flipped. We where able to help a couple of the neighbors hot meals.
