Random Thought Thread

I recently bought a Les George "Magnate" in Magnacut this winter, but haven't had a chance to use it yet; but this summer I should be able to compare it to the UF2 in D3V that I just picked up off the exchange this week. If I recall from CPK testing, their D3V was more durable than the Magnacut blades they have been testing, while looking for the best blade profile, edge, and HT for Magnacut to make them (everyone) happy.

Curious if you’ve had more use with both. UF2 is an all time great fixed blade that I’ll never be without in my collection. That Magnate Les George has caught my attention recently and I can’t find any info from folks who use it. Any feedback is appreciated!

So, Cwilliams563 Cwilliams563 got my UF2 before camping season and I didn't get to use it. I was only using the Magnate a few times for cutting things like rope and boxes, but it's a little heavy and could likely do heavier duty work. However, I've been babying it and keeping it pristine, since I was using my SwampRat RatManDu for heavier duty work.

Now I've got a couple of DEK1 for heavy duty work as well, while still trying to keep my Les George pretty, as is my habit 😂 I should only buy used and beat up knives if I want to use actually them hard 😳 I also picked up a Benchmade Saddle Mountain recently as it's thin for front pocket duty and it's lightweight, so I didn't bring the Les George camping over the 4th of July. If you're interested in hearing more, PM me.

EDIT - I didn't think it was appropriate to post my comparison pics and details here, unless people really want to hear more DEK1 vs Magnate in a CPK forum 🤣 Hence, taking it to PM... But here is a size comparison of many other knives to the DEK1 (Magnate in the middle next to a pair of DEK1).

Amazing little knife, carries quite well. The Magnacut and G10 are a major plus, especially on these hot summer days. Razor sharp and the quality and F&F are excellent. It’s just shy of 3/16” thick, but has a great high saber geometry. Weighs around 7oz by itself, not sure w/ the sheath. I picked it up on CastleGate (Les George distributor) when they were on sale $275 shipped total. I have large hands just for reference. View attachment 2248638

It's a 7.1 oz knife, and 10.4 oz with taco sheath and clip. The overall length is similar, but the Magnate blade is maybe 4.15" and the rest is handle.

If this is not okay in a CPK forum, let me know. Here are the pics I sent Sagandavis Sagandavis last night - you covered the other points I wrote to him about. But the handle material feels more rubbery than G10.IMG_8349.JPGIMG_8350.JPGIMG_8348.JPGIMG_8346.JPGIMG_8347.JPGIMG_8345.JPGIMG_8344.JPG

Tensegrity Tensegrity , and anyone else in VT, how did you weather the storm? Was just watching the news and didn't realize how bad it was up there :(
Thank you for asking!

We're up high in the Greens above both the Winooski and Lamoille rivers which are at catastrophic levels. A 17 min trip to work this AM -just- missing the floods, just took 90 mins back as I had to go over the Greens, south of Mt. Mansfield, then north and back -over- the Greens via small, high back roads. But made it home. We're good.

The valleys are destroyed, worse than storm Irene. Thousands of acres of farms are gone. The state ctr, Montpelier, is under 6ft of water.

Only one death that I know of. We're keeping it hyper local and supporting our farmer neighbors down the road. Homes not washed out, but buying them milk and offering help to clean this weekend. More rain coming though.

Thanks again for you kind thoughts.

This is my exit from Burlington to Richmond on rt 89 S. The Winooski river is at the base of the far hill. The water you see is all farmland. And a local service station. 14 foot overflow reported here;

Glad to hear your clan is ok, compadre. Hard to believe that sort of devastation in VT at this time of year.
