When I was commissioned as a Reserve Police Officer in a tiny hill country town in Texas years ago, I was told I could carry anything I wanted. I chose a 25-5 with 4” barrel. I wore a cartridge belt in addition to speed strips. There was always someone who came up to ask what I was carrying.
"His horse was fast as polished steel. Wore his gun outside his pants. For all the honest world to feel."

She said her name was Jo. I thought it a peculiar name for a dame...but she was paying and I was behind on the rent. She gave me some story about her husband, a coyote and some killer wasps, but I was halfway through a bottle of I.W. Harper and it seemed just plausible enough to accept the retainer...

I was a Reserve Deputy for my local Sheriff's Office for lot of years. They counted for some rather formative years of my life.

I did not get to choose what I carried for a duty gun really, my choices were limited to what the agency allowed. At that time, it was either the Sig P220 or the Glock 22. Shortly after I was hired, they phased out the P220s and went solely with the Glock. I don't particularly like Glocks, I don't find them all that sexy, but I shoot excellently with them and there is no denying that they work.

I am a wheelgun fan for sure. I don’t care for the way Glocks look but I sure love that they always go bang when you want them to. Texas true bore customs does a nice job stipling and raising the grip a tad behind the trigger guard as well as narrowing the overall boxiness. I stopped carrying a 1911 after being here for a while because of crappy weather, and carry G22’s anytime not off the beaten path.

I realized quickly that I did not have the temperament to be in law enforcement. I truly respect what they do and would back them up if I ever saw one in need, but I would have been a terrible full time cop in this century!

Too many of the paid staff that I worked with had broken families. Law enforcement careers are not easy on the family and that is the primary reason that I opted not to pursue it as a full time occupation. In hindsight though, with the state of things nowadays, I am quite relieved that I didn't continue down that path.

A US Marshall once told me, "It's a noble profession", and I wholeheartedly believe that - if only everyone would see it as such. These days, not enough of the good ones are staying in that profession and too many who have no business in uniform are filling those voids. It's messy.

I really appreciate your comments- thank you for sharing. My LEO brother who loved his job for the first years became a bitter, angry, mean person who should not have carried a badge.

I have met some great officers and we are extremely lucky to have a great group up here. We also don’t have many of the issues going rampant in some areas which helps.

...There was a goggle eyed guy named Scrimgeour in the lobby and I asked what his part was in the story...and she told me he invented the Reaper.
I told her "look lady, I may not be a genius but that was Cyrus McCormick"...and she said "no, not that Reaper...but let's not get off track".

Townes was a national treasure.

He's one of those song writers that brings chills when you listen to his music.

(Tecumseh Valley; If I Needed You;...on and on)
I never got to see him live. Great YouTube video for Pancho and Lefty where he has a cig stuck up in the top of his guitar and he's singing in a kitchen.
Story songs that dealt with some darker parts of life some. One of the great underappreciated writers and singers imho.
I saw Prine, Young, Hank Jr., Lovett and some others. Townes was equal or better than all of them. Ricky Scaggs and Dudley Conell probably are tied but bluegrass is a different animal.
