Random Thought Thread

I have been increasingly afraid that the influx of new CPK fans may drive Nathan to quit.

Just a lot of new-ish folks in the last year or so who have different expectations - they want availability when they want it, they demand constant updates, they get butthurt when they see people getting preorder fulfillments that were made 12-24 months prior and they can't get the same thing or when they're not fast enough to score on Fridays and then demand he change his whole system, they ask questions that are already answered in stickied threads... and all this sort of thing is the sort of headache that Nathan hates the most, and I can't blame him.

I am not worried as there is no quitting in Nathan. He is only 48 YO and he is putting one kid through college already plus his son's number also coming up soon in this regard. Nathan & Jo have coalesced a great team of people around them who they treat as family (the CPK-Family) so unless something extraordinarily strenuous happens, I don't see the usual challenges due to expansions putting the kibosh on Nathan's desire to get more of his knives into more hands. Of course Nathan & Jo visit and revise their business model from time to time because tweaking the business model is necessary with regards to some of your concerns as stated.

People come and people go as interests shift and some of us (early collectors) are sitting on a pile of (unrealized) CPK profit should we decide to cash out just to keep a half a dozen or so "working" CPKs. There've been butt-hurt folks because they let themselves believe that there was something special about their patronage (aka entitlement). The way that I look at it, most hobbies are ephemeral in nature. Lastly, yes there are a lot of repeated and extraneous questions but there are some great folks in here (both from the old days and some newer) who dig up the answers from the archives in addition to Blues keeping the silly-billy stuff in check in case some folks keep pushing the boundaries. Of course there are some extra technical stuff which require Nathan's own meticulous attention like this guy today who comes in here once in a while kinda dismissive of the delta HT equating it to the industry standard 3V. This will grab Nathan's attention and rightly so.

When I was in 2nd grade a bunch of girls brought in their CPKs and had their school picture taken with them. There was also 1 guy that jumped on the trend who eventually became a good friend. I like to make sure that he remembers it
When I was in second grade I got my nose busted. A cowboy boot right to the nose. I was never mean to girls from that moment on, even to this day. 🤣🤣

It wasn't so much that I think Nathan would quit making knives, I mean, it's essentially his job and we all got bills. I was more afraid that he might just say to heck with trying to make everyone happy, I'm just backing off from being active and responsive in the forum,

For every fanboy, there is an anti-fanboy or two, as well as 10 other folks who simply recognize a great thing for what it is. I do enjoy seeing Nathan's hackles rise though when someone takes digs at his hard work - it always serves as a good reminder of the awesomeness we invest in when we buy a CPK.

I appreciate Nathan's and Jo's engagement here - it adds that extra special something that connects us enthusiasts to their brand. I hope they are never given cause to have to withdraw. I was just reviewing the FK3 preorder thread and my head spun a wee bit just thinking about all the work Jo has to put in to organize these kinds of orders. We are fickle animals and I hope we don't get too far down that road where we take too much advantage of their good graces.

That's the one thing to be concerned about; Nathan's already mentioned many times, that he's not a fan of preorders. He still does them solely because there are so many of us who want them.

But there's a point for everyone and everything. Everyone I've ever trained/mentored, has been taught to memorize this phrase, "More trouble than it's/you're worth". It applies to just about everything in life, from jobs, to relationships. Once that point is reached, it's over.

The preorders allow us to get CPKs, where our internet speeds and reflexes may not (on typical Friday sales). They've also allowed buyers a great deal of flexibility in options, to customize their orders.

The thing is, if Nate decides that the hassle of dealing with it all, is more trouble than it's worth, he's already mentioned seriously considering going to just sales (with limited options) and completely foregoing preorders.

Well, I don’t know Nathan or any of his crew so I won’t act like I know or speculate about what he is thinking or how the whining might affect him. Hopefully it won’t.
What I will do is lighten up, let that roll off and talk about something I do have some actual knowledge about.

My random thought is: 🥁
I feel a new sheath coming. New EDC needs fitting pocket drawers.

P.S.

Random thought for the day;

Anyone else notice a HUGE increase in the last 3 months of the number of morons putting cheap Amazon LED headlight bulbs in their vehicles and blasting ridiculous amounts of glare? It appears to be mostly semis and 3/4 ton trucks (and the round reflector style headlights on older Jeeps, that have NO cutoff).

It's not that I'm getting more sensitive to glare, either. In a line of ~2 dozen vehicles of oncoming traffic, you can see the HUGE difference in the glare from a few of them, compared to all the rest. Many of them are throwing way more glare than halogen high beams. 🤬

I have intentionally avoided CPKs in Magnacut and in fact I proudly proclaim that as a decent enough CPK "collector" I shall never seek or acquire one in MC. After the posts today, I'd make sure that it will be stated so as epitaph on my headstone. Well, too bad that my wish is to be cremated but still, it's the thought that counts 🤣

I don't take kindly to my friend above being disparaged either.

Something weird that I can not quite compute! This thought popped to my head after seeing Blues posting old movies YT links:

I can watch older movies with actors and actresses who have since passed away but I am uneasy watching streamed series when lead and fave actors have (recently, within a decade) passed. Maybe this has something to do with these series being newer than the aforementioned movies but I find it difficult to revisit the likes of The Sopranos, The Wire, I dunno, Boardwalk Empire, Bosch, etc... Undoubtedly I have screw loose thinking about my own mortality perhaps? Perhaps the series being too contemporary and because they have multiple episodes and season, that reinforces my own insecurities?

Like said, weird and random / not so random!
