Random Thought Thread

Random thought: there really is no good compelling reason for Carolina Reaper peppers to exist. It is a man-made atrocity that serves no reasonable purpose. Not made because we should. But because we could.

Also, I bought another old Ford truck and I think Jo's probably going to actually go through with it this time. I'm going to lose a ball.

Details / specs please if you would, just outta my curiosity for older HD trucks.

On your possible neutering due to your impulsive buying penchant for Ford trucks, TMI, however Jo used to be a vet's tech so I'd sleep with one both eyes open if I were U.

I don't blame anyone for selling their HDFK for a crazy price. It's not flipping, it's supply and demand. It's the market. Flipping to me is buying a DEK1 during a Friday Sale and listing it the following week for double. That's wrong in my book. Older or discontinued patterns often fetch crazy money for all makers. People that missed the train want to get one at all costs. I've considered listing my last remaining HDFK for a lofty price, but I just couldn't part with it. I do wish I had back the other 4 that I owned...along with a few OG FK1s, EDC 1 and 2's, Light Choppers, etc.
No doubt I'd list them now. The current market is just capitalism. Such is life!

If your post was written in reaction to what I posted earlier today, I did not mention any specific pattern in my comment...but I was not expecting to see a certain quite recent production CPK being offered for $800, nor expecting that it would sell as quickly as it did. (And yes, I am aware that they are in demand, and the history of the offering.)

As I said earlier, "the market is the market". I've been here for 25 years. There are very few surprises or transactions which I haven't already seen many a time before. And I'm no stranger to rare or high end knives, custom or production.

I rarely post sales, but when folks contact me privately and ask about something I own, I ask them to make an offer. If the offer motivates me, I have been known to sell.

When I got in the preorder for the DEK1 and DEK3 over a year ago. I was after the perfect EDC blade from CPK. I ordered both in MC. After a long wait and much anticipation. I had both in my hands. What also happened was Nathan saying he would likely never make the DEK3 again. Compound that with the fact that the failure rate was high for MC DEK 3. Making the DEK3 MC a very sought after blade that many people regret not getting in on the preorder. I now had a knife that could reach boot dagger status pretty easily. This is not something that I would want to edc. I don’t like safe queens. I like users. So I took a guess at the fair market value for the rare MC DEK3. The knife immediately sold. So maybe the fair price is higher? Who knows. I am very happy with my DEK1 and the short time I got to spend with the DEK3.
I am not a flipper. Never have been. But I did find luck on this preorder and resale.

I hear ya, JACKMANDU JACKMANDU

I recently saw a traditional knife snapped up in a certain pattern by a certain maker for $2500. I happen to own the first knife that maker ever built in that pattern, and it was built at my request.

Don't think that I didn't have to fight the impulse to list my even rarer specimen and strike while the iron was hot. I didn't, but that's neither here nor there.

For me personally, I struggle between the option to take what the market will give...and my sense of community both as a member and a very long time moderator.

I hope you don't take offense for my having used the sale as an example, as I have absolutely no ill will toward you and respect your right to do what you want with your property. The market is the market.

My post wasn't aimed at, or a reaction to, anyone's individual post or sale. I was simply offering my opinion on recent trends. I also like to drink good bourbon. Don't get me started on the current bourbon market.
You can't even get the good stuff where I live unless you have a relationship with the owner of the ABC store...(generally speaking).

Or...you can wait for a care package from generous souls like BIGDORK BIGDORK (Thanks, Jim!!!)

Actually, the mid level stuff that was recommended to me the last time there wasn't all that bad, and at the rate I go through a bottle, will last me years.
(Yellowstone, and Blade & Bow, both of which have won Gold at the S.F. competition. I still prefer McKenna, but...)

It's safe to say I'm deep down the rabbit hole when it comes to CPKs. When there's a pattern I'm actively hunting after, it's very blatant. Is it hard to justify spending $800 on a single EDC sized knife, or $1500 on a large chopper? Both yes and no for different reasons. Ultimately for me, it's the experience and satisfaction I get from using and owning any high-ticket knife. So the ones I do purchase I think the price is fair in my eyes. I could just as easily be called crazy by anyone outside looking in.

But there is just something about whipping out a high-end knife and eating a steak that sends me over the edge to purchase again and again🤣

this all feels like one of those conversations that’s going to end in tears.

It occurred to me recently that I could sell all my CPKs and spend at least 6 months in Fiji.

....but then I'd just be another sun-baked, pickled ex-pat wallowing in self-loathing, telling anyone who will listen about all the beautiful knives I used to own.

So yeah, B Burke , you're pretty much spot-on. 😂

"Hey, sun-baked pickle man...we have good knives for you!!!"

Regardless of prices, I think it's cool to see the HDFKs trading hands. Too rich for my blood, but only because my $ goes elsewhere. If you love the knife, I can see only wanting to sell if it's for a substantial amount. Also, if you love the knife, I can see having no problem paying a high price.

Spend your earnings on what sustains you and also on what brings you happiness. The latter will differ for each person.

It's great to have so many fantastic options from CPK. They're so good, that I think you could probably buy one or two models for use and be totally fine for any scenario.

Glad everyone is getting so much enjoyment from these fine blades!
