Battery's not included...

Lead acid batteries are not expensive, and the raw materials can be recycled indefinitely, cheaply.

People complain about solar and wind because the storage capacity issue, but if everybody is storing the power they need, it becomes moot.

What could be better than being off the grid?
Yeah. An electric vehicle can be more “off the grid” friendly than a gas vehicle. Although I definitely would still want a gas 4 cylinder 4x4 Toyota Tacoma.

Does anyone have a good leather protector that they particularly recommend? I usually only use kydex but had to get one of those beautiful cpirtle made sheaths for my Dek1.
Obviously my opinion does not have much importance with the amazing leather folks here, but I use Fiebings Neatsfoot Oil and Skidmore’s Beeswax or Sno Seal on sheaths, holsters, boots and gloves for wet/snow. Sometimes I simply use Silicone Spray if I think necessary because I always have it handy for tools, guns, etc.

Enjoy your sheath! He makes beautiful sheaths.

Amazing - thank you! I will check those out 😊

I use Obenauf's on everything leather that’s going to be in the elements, from boots to sheaths. I like the oil better than the solid lp. It will darken it some. The lp tends to build up a residue unless used very sparingly. I’m am no leather expert by any standards but have used it for 15 years and still do.

Obenauf's seems like some solid stuff. I went ahead and ordered some Sno Seal to try though. $9.50 AUD (about 6 USD) for 7oz? I could not say no!
Obenaufs is great stuff as well.
SnoSeal is great for wet conditions imho. I cheat and use a low heat from a heat gun while rubbing it in so it gets good penetration without gumming up in thick spots. For my gloves I warm them in the oven for 2-3 minutes at 200 F and then rub the beeswax in- works great and was recommended by my favorite work glove maker (Vermont Gloves).

Just a thought though! Since you got a sheath from CPirtle- I feel like you might want to send him an email to ask his preference.

Late to the party here. Didn't Toyota hint they are close to engineering static state batteries that can hold enough charge for 1000+ kilometers? That would be incredible.

Where do they dispose the giant carbon fiber wind mill blades that need changed every 6-8 years? And you should Google how much synthetic oil a wind turbine holds. 🤣🤣
Apparently one company just piles them up near Sweetwater and let's them disintegrate:

Never mind that each windmill requires a massive concrete pad. When you put dozens or hundreds of them up in an area you lose swaths of pasture, fields and natural habitats for several lifetimes. About the same for solar farms, although they use less concrete. That is not to say that oil/gas take less space, but windmill pads in addition to existing well sites means a net loss of habitat.

Nuclear energy comparatively, has very high energy output, but things like Chernobyl and Fukushima scare people, along with the waste storage with very long half-lives.

Nuclear is absolutely our most effective option until John Galt pops back out from Atlantis. He hasn't been answering my post cards though, so idk when that will be.

Until then, Don and Sancho will keep busy.

Started using Sno-Seal in the 70's. Have used others, Aqua Seal etc...never Obenauf's though I have heard great things.

I agree with B's recommendation to warm the leather when using Sno-Seal for better penetration.

I've had a can of Ren-Wax for a couple of decades that I use for most of my knife related leather gear, unless it needs something more robust.

Amazing. I'll definitely warm up the leather with my wife's hairdryer 🤣
ETA: how often do you need to apply Sno-Seal?

Do you guys also warm up your blades before applying any wax or-the-like to them? I've heard flitz works especially well doing that.
And surely you'd need to get to a much higher temperature then a hairdryer before the HT protocols are affected?
