Random Thought Thread

Here in the Bay Area, FB has full medical histories of much of the population. How did they get them ? Several hospitals received Zuckerberg grants. In return, FB received "anonymized" medical records, without name or social, etc., that the hospitals removed.

Then, as a patient, you go to one of these hospitals - and while waiting for your appointment - browse FB or just use google maps. FB then correlates location data that it receives independently with "anonymous" medical records.

I stopped using FB years ago entirely. Also deleted google maps from my phone. My only remaining social media use is BF.

If you aren't paying for it, you're the product.

I'm continually amazed at how this is lost on people. Or even worse, they just don't care that they are being used and monetized in ways they prefer to be unaware of.

Smdh this is one of the reasons I HATE social media people get their little feelings hurt over everything and nothing at all !...imo this new up coming generation is too damn soft and don't get me started on cancel culture ...I never had a myface account or a bookspace account or whatever you call them and never will .... There's too many people who think their opinions need to be known by everyone and if you don't agree with them your not only wrong but a bigot and a racist and you and your entire family will be cancelled
Smdh when is this shit going to stop and when will people get back to their roots of being strong willed Americans of yesteryear and not these super sissies they are running amuck in the USA?!?!?....

Ahhh, being harvested for data.

Just like the, 'rewards' at 7/11. All the metrics given up for the exchange of a Slurpee.

When the nice ladies repeatedly ask me if I have, 'rewards'. I tell them to use theirs. My, My, how their face lights up. Thinking I'm doing them a kindness. Tipping them in a way.

With them never giving a thought to if 7/11 is willing to give you a bag of chips. Saying it's free. When in reality, you're giving 7/11 permission to use and to sell your data. For much more then that stupid bag of chips is worth.

So this lady thought it was offensive?

I asked her to explain what she found offensive about that. I thought it was pretty funny. It's also factually true that Chicago has the highest homicides in the United States and has for 11 years running.

The post that got me banned (which was deleted) was a response to her just quoting the statistic of the cities with the most murders that show Chicago on top. Not murder rate or murder per capital but just the highest number of murders. It's Chicago. Everybody knows that. Apparently this information, and also the statistics of the cities that follow Chicago is offensive.

I've been banned for a week. #sad

Seriously though. Dont tell the truth.
Homicides = Hugs

Question it and the Gestapo of Truth will come and smash your face in with an iron boot for eternity.

or something.

My generation was the first to start using Facebook. I initially resisted, but an account was made for me and I got sucked in for a little bit. My parents and older relatives warned me not to post anything I may regret (foul language, political diatribes, etc.), and they were right. Most of the adults I knew at the time didn't have Facebook but gave the same warnings. I finally got tired of it and deleted my account in 2016. Haven't missed it for a minute.

Now it seems that my generation generally eschews Facebook, recognizing it for the threat it poses. However many older adults (thankfully not my parents) now have Facebook accounts and frequently post the same incendiary, insulting, and downright stupid s**t that my generation was warned against. The irony is infuriating.

Story time.

During my younger years I grew up around an auto shop.

There was a Ford 302 v8 sitting on the ground. Intake and heads removed.

And I told myself I wanted to experience what it's like to bust an engine into pieces with a 8 pound sledgehammer.

And swung away, I did.

Didn't stop until it was hand sized chunks of crap. Down to the crank.

There's a lesson in this. What? You got me. I just wanted to do it.
