Random Thought Thread

Sometimes a knife will shift around a little in a hit, causing the location of the edge to shift around. You either grip harder, hit lighter, readjust between hits or accept lower accuracy. <SNIP>

Shifting grip is one of the major complaints when a knife is tested on Forged In Fire. Wouldn't wrapping the handle with something like tennis racket tape work just as well without being permanent?

I was a bit distracted by the couch I was snoozing on so I started thinking about what 3 CPKs I could not or would not be without! I know that I post a lot of banter type responses but I don’t make too many threads! So...

Obviiisly, it depends on one’s circumstances so with mine currently being an urban dweller, I would choose FK, HDFK and my UF. It feels weird to me to let go of my choppers, LC, MC, BC and also to leave out the Shiv... also letting go of my EDC1 / EDC2, bit like I had said if one was absolutely forved to owning 3, those stated earlier would be on my top shelf...

What would you hooligans choose and why?

I love all my CPK, but if I had to choose only three it would be the DE UF, LC, and the EDC (not sure if it would be EDC or EDC2). My DE UF is my grail CPK. I think the LC is great for So FL. I carry one of my EDC practically all the time.

Not having had the fortune to try a UF (Please, oh please, lady luck be with me when Nate sees fit to bless us), my 3 would be:
FK - prefer this size at the minimum.

HDFK - good all-around general purpose.

MC - always liked large camp knives. Learned to do most outdoor bushcraft things with a large camp knife. They may be a little more unwieldy for some finer tasks than a smaller knife, but if I carried only 1 knife on a backpacking trip (yeah, right. Lol), this would be it, because it'll do just about everything I need to be able to do with a knife.

Eagerly awaiting the FK2.0 and the DEK, and of course, the UF. One of those may potentially replace the FK or HDFK in my current list.

Initially I thought this too. The Tape will keep it from slipping and provide extra traction but won't allow the handle of the knife to flex or shift with every hit.

I think the purpose of the rubber is not only to provide traction but to let the knife return to its "resting state" so to speak. These shifts that Nathan mentions with some hits can now flex along with the rubber without having to re-adjust your swing or grip. Hard to put into words but think of a basketball when it hits the ground wherever that ball makes contact with the ground it flattens in that spot the second it bounces up the rubber ball returns to its normal state "round."

Or a car spring. As it moves along a bumpy road it moves about in various directions to correct for different impacts the car tire makes with the road while the car remains relatively level, stable and not changing much from its original position. At a stop (or in between swings) the spring (rubber in this case) wants to return to its resting position.

As the knife makes impact at the edge whatever deflection that may occur is translated to the handle the rubber can now flex and compensate for the bit of movement and as you bring your arm back for the next swing the rubber on the handle can now return to its normal resting state (without adjusting for anything) and is already prepared for the next impact.

I'm probably looking too far into this and don't even know if my explanation makes any sense? (even to myself) But if it's what I'm imaging in my mind it's actually genius!!

Random thought: I think it was about when Jo started cutting chickens hanging on a rope in our driveway that our neighbors stopped waving at us.

Ha ha! I have a piece of 4" corrugated hose too. I though about filling it up with sand and see if I could cut through it with one slice. But that thing cost me $15 and I need it to redirect water flow from one of our downspouts, so that was a no go!

I would love to see some photos of NinJo cutting chickens:p

Favorite CPK's are The Shiv and UF in a virtual tie, and then the LC or MC

The Shiv is sexy with Beautiful lines-Not designed as all purpose knife, She's a fighter-Pig Sticker
(Sexy with Beautiful lines is good enough!!

The UF is sexy and designed as a more All-Around Knife, Still lethal and beautiful
(Beautiful and Lethal is good enough)

The LC is lightweight, can carve up a turkey and Chop down a tree (MC also)
(cutting and chopping, what's not to love)

LOL! That is the funniest thing that I have read all week. Seriously. :D Maybe they were thinking that it was some sort of voodoo ritual.

BTW, I got the shipping notice from Jo. I bought the HDFK Friday. What took so long?

Lemme guess: maybe you spend far too much time on fixing yourself up before you get online to check your email?

Are agist jokes allowed around here?

Harumpf! The time stamp on Jo's email is 3:39 PM...............Hmmmm. That's kind of strange since it's only 3:14 right now. o_O

Old people jokes are fine. I tell them all the time. One of my favorite cartoons is gibbleguts. See, I can still read the fine print.

I need one of them UFs, so I can verify this :)

I use my LC a lot, the Shiv not as much, but it is still a keeper. The original FK is a great utility blade, but I think the UF would definitely fill a need. But I can't say for sure until I get one (such an optimist :)).

You definitely need a UF dogrunner. It is the holy grail of CPK knives!;)
