It's probably good that I have no idea what those things are. ;)

NAS (Network Attached Storage) is basically a HDD for your entire house. You can rip any file you want, including movies and music. Then you simply use a service like Plex and you can access your entire library with a few button presses. It will organize all your media for you in a nice graphic interface.

I have thousands of CDs and hundreds of 4K and Blu-ray movies ripped from my physical copies. So I can watch or listen to my media anywhere in my house or even remotely.

But what can you cut with it?

I still just turn up the Technics turntable with a stack of vinyl (full rack system from the 80s) and crack a beer for entertainment ... but I think there's a VHS player downstairs somewhere, is that compatable? But then I still have metal yard darts.

Oh shit. CPK should do a run of yard darts.

This reminded me of a shameful, yet funny story:

My wife and I were dating at the time. We were at a friend's house and we were in their game room. I was playing darts with my buddy and my wife was sprawled on the floor, reading a magazine or something. For some brain dead reason, I thought it would be funny to toss a dart and that it would land perfectly between her feet. In mid air, it dawned on my stupid self that this was a really bad idea, despite me usually having good aim and there being plenty of space between her feet.

Well, you all know where this is going.... With an audible "thunk", that dart sunk into her shin bone. I will never forget her face in that moment or my sense of horror and shame.

For some strange reason though, it's been 22 years and we're still together.

OIC.

Thanks for the info but I'm not interested in that.

The "fun" of collecting & playing, listening to &/or viewing LPs, DVDs & CDs for me is the individual selection process, the handling of the media & putting the LP, DVD &/or CD on the turntable or in the DVD/CD player.

While convenient, the ease of steaming whatever I want to view or listen to is not of any interest to me.

In fact, I've noticed a concerning trend on Amazon of only offering the rental or sale of movies now by means of streaming or download w/o any option to buy a physical DVD.

I know that I can convert streamed content to DVD but it's a cumbersome process which is no better than having a VHS tape because you can't skip to pre-indexed scenes or chapters to see what you want but instead have to fast forward & hunt & peck to find what you want to watch.

Same applies to streamed music Heck, even LPs have visible tracks where you can set down the needle to play what you want to hear.

That's why I take a physical LP, DVD or CD over streamed content any day.🤷

I get the allure of physically grabbing the media you want and putting it in the player. But I also got sick of having a different player in every room.

I have ADHD when it comes to music though. I much prefer to set up a playlist and just choose the songs I want and listen immediately for instant gratification.

I do the same thing for action movies. Sometimes, I just want to watch a fight scene or shootout. I'm not a fan of streaming because I'm a quality snob. I want the full quality 4K rip or the FLAC lossless rip of my CD.

There is a growing trend towards physical media again. Especially since there are signs that digital sources are starting to put limitations on its accessibility. Questions regarding actual ownership and such has folks starting to rethink the convenience of accessible digital media when it can all be taken away, particularly when the "purchaser" has no hard copies to back it up.

I've got 3 high end audio set ups w/multiple LP turntables, phono preamps, CD transports, DACS & players, audio preamps & amps as well as a CDR to transfer LPs to CDs that I've never used.

I've also got a TV w/a built in DVD player, 2 large flat screen TVs, 2 DVD/Blu-ray players & 2 combo DVD/VHS player/recorders.
So, I collect AV gear the same way I collect LPs, CDs & DVDs.

The only thing that I don't have yet is a "smart" &/or 4k TV but I really don't want or need one of those.

LOL!!! 😉

Not to mention censorship or running changes to movies (looking at you Lucas) like Star Wars. Also as you mentioned, Netflix, Disney and Max are notorious for just pulling content.

You also can run into internet data cap issues. A full length 4K streaming movie at a decent bitrate can run around 40GB. If you have a full house with everyone streaming, you can quickly run over the average data cap limit. When my kids are home for the summer, we routinely would have went over the 1.25TB limit that my cable Internet company has. So I would have to up the coverage during the summer.
