Only Ford could move to aluminum body panels and actually have worse corrosion problems
This is so true lol

It's very odd almost always starts where the good "skin" straps over the inner structure towards the front of the hood

Not sure if it's a chemical reaction with whatever adhesive they are using, over maybe some kind of stress from the aluminum being stretched and flexing in temp changes

VW is pretty much the one brand I just wouldn’t buy. Negative experiences in every way from mechanical design to dealership to their systematic cheating of emissions standards.

Galvanic something or other? Isn’t that when differing metals basically create an electrical current that erodes one of them?

Possible that it’s galvanic corrosion. There are ways to mitigate it in the design. They may not have taken those steps.

I should use a magnet to see if the inner structure is steel

That would explain it

Thanks all for the replies. It's my first time buying from a dealership so I'm learning all sorts of new ways to get royally f@&%#d.

VW is funny because 50% of people I ask say they have bad maintenance issues while the other 50% loves them and has no issues (including siblings of mine).

Are the corrosion issues with Ford more specific to northern climates where roads are salted in the winter (I'm in Texas, so that isn't really a factor for me)? Or is it present regardless of climate?

Regardless, it all depends on who gives me the best deal.

Salt isn't the factor in the aluminum corrosion

But climate could be. I'm very close to Detroit and we can get very cold and hot

Sorry I don't have a better answer for you (for warranty does cover the hood corrosion with a replacement up to a certain amount of years though)

And do not let them low ball you too bad on your trade in , if you have one

Casinostocks Casinostocks might be able to help a lot more than me!

I'll be happy to send you some MMR (Manheim Market Report) screen shots to help you with the estimated range of what the franchisee will likely offer you, if you'd like to PM me the VIN plus some important info such as current mileage, accident history (I can see those on certain reports but like to hear about the history better from the owner), color and general condition such as rough-below average/average/good/very good/excellent. PM only if you place some trust in me vis a vis the info which I need as stated, but please do not share any personal info on the open forum.

We have had 3 VWs, 1 Porsche, 2 Jaguars and never had a hint of a problem.
My only problem with these is, the dealerships are 1 1/2 country hours away, or I would be in a Jag.

We now have an F-150, an Escape & a Focus RS. Again, no problems outside consumable parts.

I have no earthly idea why we have escaped the typical stories.

Thank you for popping in!

Hmm vehicle problems. Nate probably knows a lot about those things. 🤣 I kind of have one now I’m trying to sort out but 🤷🏻‍♂️. I think the exhaust manifold gasket is failing on cylinder 6, but I don’t see any soot or sign of failure.

Anyways, me and the boy got up early today for haircuts, came home and mowed the lawn. Getting ready for his baseball game at 2:00 now. 👍🏻
