Random Thought Thread

I watch Andrew Zimmern back in the day. He would try anything once. Some stuff he would have to hype himself up for.

I try to be open to new foods, but there's some stuff I don't think I need to try to know I won't like it.

I tried fried grasshoppers with lime and they're not bad, but not great either. Kind of like grass flavored jerky.

That fermented fish stuff from Sweden or Norway? Hard pass. Eating spiders? Couldn't do it, unless I was literally starving.
Dog? I have personal objections to eating dogs.

I'm curious why this DEK1 hasn't sold yet. 🤔

It was listed 9 days ago and everything listed before & after it sold long ago.

What do you think?

Is the price too high? Is it because it's made with AEB-L? Or do you think there's some other reason for this?

It's puzzling . . . .

One of the two foods he hated was durian. It's by far my favorite fruit. But it's definitely a love it or hate it flavor. I've never met anyone that didn't fit into one of those two categories.

Saw the durian episode recently. Zimmern tried it & didn't like it but there are a lot of other things he's tried & didn't like.

One of the other things is doesn't like are walnuts. 🤷‍♂️

Two "weird" foods that I haven't tried yet (and don't care to go out of my way to do so) are durian & balut.

From what I've seen/heard, if you can get past the smell, durian tastes ok. I'd try some as long as I didn't have to pay for it but that opportunity hasn't come up yet.

Same applies to balut, except that I'd balk at a fully developed embryo w/bones, wings & beak.

I prefer any fully developed bird that I eat to be cooked.

Update 05/25/2025:

Still unsold.

The guy has lowered his price by $25 & there have been some (assumedly) snarky responses posted to the thread which have been deleted.

Still wondering why he's having such a problem selling this DEK. 🤷‍♂️

Anyone who knows care to clue me in publicly here or privately by PM??? 🤔

I guess I'd be one. I don't hate it, but I'm not going looking for it.

I'll have a piece or two, but the ones I've tried were too sweet for any more.

I forgot! I tried balut......I couldn't gag it down.

I would argue that his mistake was taking that GIGANTIC bite. Even durian lovers I know wouldn't eat it like that. A smaller bite would have been more palatable.

I think the fermented fish is the same - I watched a video on how it's supposed to be consumed and it isn't eaten straight out of the can in a big bite. I think the can is typically opened far away from the table and it's eaten in small bites with raw onions/potatoes.

I tried Cambodian fried/seasoned tarantulas and it was surprisingly good. I can only describe it as a garlicky, spicy, crispy seafood/beef jerky. The butt was the weirdest part. I didn't eat the fangs either.

I've also had balut. It wasn't SUPER developed (no feathers). It tasted like... chicken x liver. The 'white' was extremely hard and difficult to bite/chew so I didn't eat that part but the rest was alright. I ate it unseasoned so I got the full flavour profile - I would add some salt or soy sauce next time.

I think foods that would be very difficult for me to try is anything involving poop, bile, or raw blood. If you watch the Best Ever Food Review show, Sonny has consumed raw blood straight from the carcass with African tribes as well as eaten stews made with cow intestine contents as well as bile. I also would prefer not to consume any primates or endangered species.

I have not tried such things (yet) but I have read similar. Apparently, one ideal way to eat it is with pickled onions, flatbread, and ice cold vodka. Imagining a very strong tasting fish, I could see those elements being quite complimentary.

I spent the better part of a week in the Bitterroot National Forest a couple of weeks ago and it was a pretty excellent and much needed experience. Exceptional food, lots of knives, great company, and the scenery wasn't too bad either.

I haven't settled on quite how I am going to write about everything; there is a lot to tell.

I'll throw a couple of teasers here for now though. Montana is an incredibly gorgeous state; I could get used to it there in a hurry. We got a glimpse of the Northern Lights (I barely was able to capture what I did). And one of the absolute highlights of my trip was the opportunity to handle an original Colclesser Bros made Kephart - the outfit that started it all. It's pictured below with some of the finest reproductions/interpretations that can be found.
