Random Thought Thread

Adam: I very much doubt if CPK will be diversifying anytime in the future into becoming CPKT(ools) but I have often wondered as to how many of these other knife makers who have added the letter T to their acronyms are indeed legitimate tool makers for tradesmen and as such?

I'm quite aware that knives indeed belong to the general tools family and are a quintessential component of any serious tools set, but I'm wondering about the other sorta tools that folks in woods (with woods? ;) ) tend to use.

Yes they indeed are but I am not aware of a big name knife maker with an acronym like XYZ-K&T which also happens to make axes and saws.

BRKT does make Golok's and such which I consider tools like a machete is a tool, they also make sharpening tools and compounds. CRKT makes little multitools and pocket tools as well as knives.

Just hating on them or does the name actually bother you? :)

Oh, not hating on them at all. I was actually wondering if any of these Cos were actual multi purpose tool makers (other than knives) or had chosen to throw in the T for Tools (not the current meaning in the pop lexicon ;) ). In any event, I don't see Nathan diversifying into any other tools like axes, chisels, hammers, multitools, saws, sickles, etc. Perhaps a machete at some farther future point when he's in his 60's and just about to retire? But I think that he's about 20 years away from there :p

Hey I make lots of tools.

^ 250,000 cuts in Kevlar with optimized D2, an order of magnitude better than the other guys.

We made the best 9" grinding disks available anywhere, 0.000" runout between the face, OD and bore, hardened steel (finish turned hard to prevent distortion from HT), balanced to a tiny fraction of an ounce inch. WIP thread for that: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/wip-steel-grinder-disk-machining.1088181

Water cooled platen chillers, shaped tool steel platens.

Design, prototyping and production for the fiberoptics industry, high speed printing industry, and the local racing industry.

Stamping tooling, tools jigs and fixtures for fabrication and welding.

We've make all kinds of tools. We only decided to specialize in knives in the last few years.

I was only aware of your platen varieties because of your website info but wasn't sure if you were still doing them. It's good that you let us know otherwise and maybe Adam was not barking up the wrong tree after all ;)

I became aware of Nathan, from a couple of knifemakers, as a machinist who made tools for knifemakers, actually - before I even realized he made knives. I seem to recall someone called him the "Prince of platens".

Though I think the type of tools MOS is thinking about are not quite of the same purposeful type?

Well we are talking about knife makers making tools, not tool makers making knives. Nathan is the man and makes serious equipment but was MOS was talking about is the 2 big "+T" companies actually making tools, even if they're little multitools and what not.

Casinostocks Casinostocks im just busting your chops. It's Friday everyone needs a giggle and a beer.

Autine. Have a custom axe from them. It's beautiful. They make traditional wood working tools. Chisels etc.

WRT CPK, they were a machine shop for years before Knives started to be 50%+ of the business. You know the PayPal. .

It seemed like the pepper plants were really dragging earlier in the year but they've definitely kicked it into high gear. Carolina Reapers, Went's Yellow Hots, Count Dracula (don't look at me, I didn't name the variety), a few other random peppers, a chunk of walnut I have no idea what to do with, and a couple of my favorite knives.

I love hot stuff and yes, that also includes hot chilly type peppers. But some of that stuff you show off, I dare not to break into without a copious amount of food and cold beverage very close by!

It's fun to lounge around checking out the subforum, but I better get back to work on my next photo project. Next after the previous "Ferrous Wheel" of Shivs, I think I'll put together the "Lethal Lollipop", with a stem that's actually a BC and a mix of - what else but - Shivs and HC, maybe an RLC, too. Coming soon to your local "Photos.." thread, against a never-changing background of drippings on dropcloth!

I'm really looking forward to this one Mr. B^2. Be back around 4ish (PDT) to check things out.
