Random Thought Thread

It depends on how the unit is sized and houses insulation etc.
It was 3*F this morning at my house this morning and the mini splits had no problem maintaining set point.
I think ours is a 3 ton American Standard heat pump unit, with a Goodman LP furnace . (No splits for upstairs / downstairs)

We rarely get below 15...and more rarely below 10 degrees. Yesterday it was running a lot but keeping up with the 67 degrees that we keep the setting on for heat.

This morning it seemed to be at 65 for much of the time, ( a couple of times it was above), and afterwards when it didn't seem to be making headway I just decided to flip to Emergency Heat, (which in our case is the furnace...not electric, like a standard heat pump without a furnace).

It's quick to make the swap...just wish the set point was a bit higher for convenience. We are pretty efficient electricity wise in the house, but even so, our bill received today was the highest I can remember in the 20 years we've been here. (Of course, the rates have gone up quite a bit. We're still rated as using less than efficient homes...and way less than average homes that compare to ours.)

Changing the set point is probably relatively easy. It's probably done at the thermostat. Look at the setup paperwork for the thermostat.

yoko yoko Glad nobody got hurt. Not close to yours but I had got a dang little chip in my truck windshield when I bought it 1.5yrs ago. Running the defroster this morning on way to work the damn windshield cracked all the way across to both sides from the chip. If only I would have had that chip fixed for like $25…

That’s gonna cost me a Fat Bastard.

I turned on the emergency heat and the house just got colder

I guess it's not hooked up...

Turned on the fire logs *shrug*
When I switched back to the heat pump from the furnace, it showed the heat on but the outside unit wasn't spinning the fan. So, I shut the breaker, waited a couple minutes, turned it back on and now the heat pump is heating the house again.

Since it's supposed to go down to 7 tonight, I'll turn on the furnace before going to bed.

Will your insurance cover it?

Will your insurance cover it?
Yup. Check your insurance policy. Some will cover it completely. Some with just a $100 deductible (and some shops will offer to pay the deductible, when you have them replace your windshield).

I busted TWO windshields in the same car within a 6 month period a couple decades ago. First incident, was just the windshield. AAA full coverage + Safelite = new windshield at 0 cost (and they even came and did it in my driveway).

Not even 6 months later, driving home at night after a heavy thunderstorm had passed (still drizzling)… BANG. Windshield is all crazed.

I actually thought someone shot at me 😅. Nope. Big branch fell and struck the passenger side of the windshield and hood. “Hey AAA…”. (Got the windshield replaced AGAIN. Got a quote to fix the hood, and took the money to get a carbon fiber hood imported from Japan 😁).

I had a Range Rover and cracked the windshield. They are heated so it was stupid expensive but it was from an accident so it was part of the insurance claim. The problem was no shop could ever get it replaced without a leak due to the wiring that went through it plus inexperience with that particular windshield. Apparently it was a pain in the ass. One shop gave up after a few tries, then the same at the next shop. That was the last straw for owning that vehicle when I was so far from a dealer. I had it when I moved here and I was 4 hours to the closest dealer. It was awesome when everything worked. But that was getting to be a less frequent occurrence. I traded it for a jeep Cherokee which I really liked. But when I moved to the woods I needed a truck so I traded that for an F350……….
