Random Thought Thread

Yes, never have seen one in winter, only in migration in the spring and fall once the leaves either fall or are just budding.

They sure do fly fast, little dive bombers, and deadly too.

But once the trees leaf out in the spring, they disappear or migrate to another place further North.

In the fall, they move through here very quickly.
We have lots of grouse and rabbits at the property, and occasionally see the gosshawks zooming through the trees. My land neighbor was riding an atv on our driveway and one knocked his hat off. There was a breeding pair close by. Pretty cool but startled the crap out of him. 🤣

Nature is really amazing.

I’ve kept a log book on migratory birds I’ve seen in my yard since 2013.

These Cooper Hawks have arrived every single year, regardless the weather, between Feb 19-21.

They actually sit at the same spot each year too.

I just stepped outside and it was dead silence with the regular local birds, so I knew a hawk must be close by.

Sure enough, this Cooper was just sitting on the back fence, waiting for it’s next meal.

Bad pic with a cell phone, but can clearly see him/her.

We have Cooper’s here too. However, I did not realize they were migratory, thanks for that tidbit!

Probably should have done the logbook thing here too, we’ve seen an impressive amount of different birds in our backyard/trees in the 18 years we’ve been here. Very much unexpected when we moved in, but we are pretty close to a well-known lake where Audubon does an annnual bird count, so I shoudln’tr have been too surprised.

We’ve seen everything from a Golden Eagle to 3 different species of Hummingbirds! A few of the more unusual ones have been a Cedar Waxwing, a Cardinal, Western Tanagers on occasion, and the aforementioned Golden Eagle in the big pine. We get Great Horned Owls in that tree fairly often too.

What is up with the airplanes 2025?
I literally said the same thing earlier today! Like totally wtf….

Depends upon the species of Hawk.

If a Red Tail, the birds don’t care and the squirrels cry.

If a Cooper, the birds are silent, and the squirrels don’t care.

Red Tails eat Squirrels
Coppers eat birds

They know the difference somehow.
Our Red Tails are fond of Prairie Dogs too.

Random thought: Can anybody who knows about croutons explain them to me please?
If you're eating salad unhappily, out of a sense of healthily eating, you want a piece of slab bacon or some garlic bread or whatever but you're eating a salad. So you have 2 croutons in your caesar salad. Those two croutons represent the highlight of your salad eating session. You don't like salad but you like the crunchy buttery croutons. So you eat your salad around these two croutons, you strategize your bite order around these 2 croutons to maximize your pleasure from eating them and in the process, you've eaten this salad.

"Croutons? Are you kidding me? Croutons...!"

Oyster crackers.

You raise a very good point

What is up with oysters. And clams

I eat them. But it's more like "This is food, someone should eat it"

Why does anybody, who is not starving, eat oysters or clams

I had clam chowder for lunch. Other than the clams it was really good.

I like them okay except for their flavor and texture and everything else about them.

The flavor and taste of the extras is great, the actual clams, not so much.
