Random Thought Thread

Met up with Dylan @Pàdruig and Dan @EngrSorenson last night for some beers, food, and great conversation. Thought I'd only be out for a few hours but before I knew it it was 11:30 and needed to get my old ass home 😁. Was great to finally meet Dylan after it didn't work out last time he was out this way, and bonus to see Dan again. Good times!

Dan, post that pic!
Dan must still be sleeping it off. Here's the pic

I think I just found another use for the thermal scanner;
Preventing guilt from yardwork.

Just killed a baby bunny with the weedwhacker 😔

Didn’t even see it until ***thwack***. It never had a chance. A few kicks and it was gone.

Had to shoo a couple of its siblings into deeper brush.

Almost hit one with the mower last year, and every time I shoo’ed it. It would take a couple hops, about a foot away, then try to stay still and hide in the grass again, right where I would make the next pass with the mower.

Amazing how they can pretty much disappear in 3-4” of grass, but I actually saw that one before running it over, and eventually just stopped mowing to slowly shoo it across the yard into the brush before resuming.

I think I’ll just do a quick scan of the yard with the thermal before yardwork.

P.S.
If anyone is thinking of looking into thermal scanners (not scopes), the Seek Nano 300 is the best deal on the market right now. Genuine 320x240 thermal for $3xx (they were $2xx).

They use your phone as the display (Android and iPhone versions available).

Can you get PETA to reimburse you for the thermal scanner?

Just trying to cheer you up

Got this battery leak on our 54 Handyman, emptying the battery in a couple of days. I traced it down to the dash-mounted, additional engine thermometer, which is wired parallel to the ignition switch. I actually prefer to keep this as is, I feel it's not a bad thing to have on the 350 ....

I found this after searching, for ~$46 on the big river site. Switches batteries upto 240A, comes with an ON/OFF remote control, switches the battery off automatically below 11.8V (in case you forget), prevents remote off switch when the car is running (> 13.2V), 3mA standby current, etc.

Works really well, I love it. Just in case you have a car that sucks too much current when turned off, and don't want to manually disconnect the battery all the time.

I have an old Land Rover I don't drive much. I often jump it and have to replace the battery annually. The only problem is that if it sits too long with "no battery," it throws a low voltage airbag code that only the dealership or indy shop with a $3k code reader can clear. It's a real pain.

You sure about the reader cost ? Don’t know about Land Rovers, but I have one for our Benz that cost $145 (iCarsoft MB V2.0, bought in 2020). Last time I used it to reset the tire readers after getting a new tire+Valve at Pep Boys. Its very useful…

Yep. iCarsoft won't clear that code. I have to take it to my local indy once a year to have that code cleared when it sits too long. I don't know the time limit, but if the battery is dead enough for a few days/weeks it trips it. Not during a battery change or just low enough that it needs a jump. It's annoying.

You can get a battery tender it will keep the voltage up in the battery. You plug it in after you drive it and it’s safe to leave siting on your vehicle. It’s NOT a charger it’s not designed to recharge a weak battery.
