Random Thought Thread

My 1997 Ford Powerstroke turbo diesel is going to run forever. But they weren't sucking exhaust out and pumping it right back into the engine. Exhaust gas recirculation, diesel particle filters, and diesel exhaust fluid systems are complicated expensive and ultimately ruin the engine, in the pursuit of what exactly? What problem is it that we're trying to solve? Is it global warming? Are we worried about the carbon dioxide greenhouse gases? Because these systems actually make that worse. They're trying to reduce particles and oxides of nitrogen that are completely harmless in most locations. This guy took that crap off of some engines that were struggling because of those problems and they put him in federal prison. I think that's a bit of an overreach.

Whoops. I'm getting political again...

Thanks in advance if you can help.

I was hoping some of you that have a CPK blades with a satin finish would post pictures? How polished are the satin blades and how much do they show scratches and use? A well loved satin finished CPK picture would be a huge help.

I'm debating what to order on the Skinner preorder. I would love a hollow ground blade, but I really dislike polished finishes as they show everything and can look pretty bad after use and I intend on using these ... a lot.

Thanks!

EDITED below :

Nathan just posted the bold below in the other thread and it answered my question.

They're all user grade. A satin ground finish on a skinning knife is actually pretty nice. It's my preference.

For simplicities sake, I want to try to streamline the options.

I will make ecam an option on the signature series for folks that don't want wood. It is an excellent micarta.

The signature series will come with a very functional nice leather sheath.

Jo is already complaining to me that I'm making this pre-order too complicated. I'm trying to streamline it as best I can.

Anyone that has a photo of a well loved satin finished CPK could still post it here. 😄

Won't any finish end up about the same with a ton of use?
No. Different finishes definitely show scratches and use far more than others. A satin finish will show more than a stone washed or tumbled finish. But I've found that not all "satin" finishes are equal, some are more polished and show scratches and any usage way more and some aren't as polished and aren't as bad at showing every little bit of use so easily.

Exactly, some folks prefer to get amoebic dysentery on a cruise rather than at a shindig.

By the way, I've been thinking about this myself recently—just imagine if right now some company decided to make a gasoline car and a diesel car, completely ignoring all the "ecology" requirements, like literally completely, but still in a sane way.

Just think about what could be achieved with today's technologies and everything else.

I seriously think, no joke, it would be completely possible to build something insanely reliable.

By the way, you know this will never happen, right?

Oh, and in some European countries there are already huge restrictions on diesel cars, and there are even talks about banning them altogether.

Inexpensive, durable, efficient, runs forever, manual transmission, very clean by the standards of when I was a kid, not allowed in this country

I’d dream of something like a 6-liter or bigger diesel engine, with insane torque. The car should be just a bit smaller than the Killdozer, you know, so I could still actually drive it to the supermarket.

And it should belch thick black smoke out of the exhaust. Dual exhausts, like on a sports car.

And it should cause cancer or something like that—or at the very least, by the smell alone everyone should instantly know I’ve arrived (the smell of my exhaust fumes).
