Now or in general?
I’m still pressing red anyway.
Like, dude, on average, in the world, seriously — in 99.99% of places, it’s actually dangerous.
Like, straight-up dangerous.
Meaning, there are a lot of places where you can’t just go out and walk around the street at night.
And most likely, it’s not because the majority would have pressed the blue button.
Are they dangerous because of the general population or a minority of dangerous criminals? It's one vote for person so I don't think dangerous places are indicative of how the vote would turn out.

Dangerous criminals?

From our point of view, yours and mine?

Or the dangerous criminals that we ourselves are in the eyes of people with “certain views”?
You understand that right now we’re speaking from your and my point of view, because we’re similar and we agree.

Are you aware that there are systems of thought and worldviews in which you and I are considered infidels, and simply taking and killing us is seen as a godly, righteous deed?

Would you give them your red button?
It all depends on the system of views.

But we, you and I, largely agree.

So so so.
Morick wants to sleep.

Everybody selects red = everybody is fine

People start selecting blue, then a whole bunch of other people also need to select blue, to save dumb people from themselves. These are people who created an unnecessary problem and they need a bunch of other people to rally and put themselves at risk to save them when they could have just everybody select red.
Damnit I doomed the world by picking blue if it lights up after I press the button just because I like the color blue lol

What if my vote isn’t the decisive one?
Do I die? 🥹

There are more than 7 billion people in the world right now.

I’m still going to press the button that gives safety specifically to me.

Man, people vote for communists and shit like that anyway. 🙄
It seems fairly simple;

If I press Red, it doesn’t matter what anyone/everyone else picks, I’ll survive. Why let stupid people decide my fate, if I can decide my own fate?

If other people are too stupid to see that simple logic and choose Red for themselves as well, oh well, we get to see stupid people make stupid choices every single day, and pay for that stupidity.

Does the button light up?

Do I get to slap the hell out of that button and it count everytime I press it?

Is there an after party?

Are we voting in a portable bathroom or is it multiple booths set up

Will timmy get to finally see boobs?

I have questions and need answers lol

Most people select blue = everybody is fine

People start selecting red and suddenly the chance of people dying starts to go up. Then a whole bunch of other people need to vote blue to counter the evil selfish murderous red voters. These are people who created an unnecessary problem and they need a bunch of other people to rally and put themselves at risk to clean up their mess when they could have just selected blue.

It's pretty symmetrical. The only way to break the symmetry is to consider the specifics of how you think the population will behave and how much you value your own life over large amounts of other people.

But the blue are creating a dangerous situation that didn't need to exist in the first place. It's like choosing to play Russian roulette, because someone else is playing Russian roulette, when no one had to play in the first place

If someone thinks half the world is gonna go with suicidal empathy and press blue, they’re delusional. Most people are going to act purely out of self interest. Living in the first world west tends to detach people from reality.
It's not just self-interest. It's the rational choice. Why create a dangerous situation where one need not exist at all. Why participate. Pressing red is opting out.

Seen that way, the blue are creating a problem where a problem need not exist

If your vote isn't decisive then you die if the other voters prefer red.

As an example, let's say every voter besides you has a 50% chance of choosing blue. Then the probabilities of the voting outcomes follow a binomial distribution.

If n=population of earth then the expected number of deaths from choosing red is going to be P(tie) n/2

P(tie) = binomial(n, n/2) / 2^(n/2+1)

binomial(n,n/2) ~ 2^n / sqrt(pi*n/2)

So expected number of deaths is n*2^(n/2-2) / sqrt(pi*n/2)

Probability of your own death from choosing blue is P(blue < n/2) = sum from k=0 to n/2-1 of binomial(n, k) / 2^n

sum from k=0 to n/2-1 of binomial(n, k) = (2^n - binomial(n, n/2))/2

So P(blue < n/2) = 1/2 - binomial(n, n/2) / 2^(n+1) ~ 1/2 - 1/(2sqrt(pi*n/2))

The ratio between expected deaths and your chance of dying is how much value your life would need to have to choose red ~ n/(sqrt(pi*n/2)-1)

If n=8,298,979,488 then the ratio is 72,686.3

So in this example, choosing red is the same as saying that your life is more important than 72,686 strangers. It's kind of like that scene in The Sum of All Fears when they realize the nuclear bomb is in the football stadium and start rushing the President out without telling anyone else to leave.

But! Even if you don't value your life at all, choosing blue now means other people have to rally to save you whereas, choosing red makes you not a part of the problem.

Another good point. In this scenario, you're probably looking at over 90% red. No rational sane person is going to select blue.

Another way to look at it: you’re looking at 7-8 billion individuals, however the right way to look at it is maybe by family units (in large part) who will perhaps vote similarly and you can assume a family will vote red so they know their family survives. Blue voters thinking purely on an individual level don’t seem to care about their families much..

I had to unlike this after I liked it so that I could like it again

Choosing red means other people have to rally against you to save the innocent people you're targeting, whereas choosing blue makes you not part of the problem.

But the blue are creating a dangerous situation that didn't need to exist in the first place. It's like choosing to play Russian roulette, because someone else is playing Russian roulette, when no one had to play in the first place
But the red are creating a dangerous situation that didn't need to exist in the first place. It's like choosing to fire at a crowd of people because you don't want to be in the crowd being fired on, when no one had to fire in the first place.

Still symmetric.

So now the red are “targeting” innocents?

Most people want to survive and want the people they care about to survive. That means they and hopefully the ones they care about pick red.

Blue voters are deluded. I mean blue “button pushers”.. In denial about human nature. Suicidally empathetic

I should go back and read the rules hahahahaha

It’s interesting.

What I initially thought was an overly simple thought exercise, becomes complicated because of human emotion. It even leads to odd reasoning for why the Blue button is the ‘better’ choice when it defies logic.

This isn’t even like the game show conundrum, where contestants are given the choice of two buttons; one button gives you ALL the money. The other button SPLITS the money between the two of you.

If both contestants choose ALL, you both get nothing.

If one chooses ALL, and the other chooses SPLIT, the one who chose ALL gets all of it, the one who picked SPLIT gets nothing.

If both choose SPLIT, each gets half.

THAT at least poses a choice worthy of consideration. If you’re both greedy, you both get nothing. If you’re fair, but the other person isn’t, you might get nothing, while they get it all. If you’re both fair, you both walk away winners. If you’re greedy, and you think they’re going to be fair, you could walk away with all of it. What do you choose?

This choice, on the other hand, I don’t get it. There’s no logic to picking Blue.

Suicidally empathetic. That’s a good one. I’ll definitely have to remember that one.

Does it make more sense to pick Blue or Red? It’s simple. Let’s assume you’re neither first, nor last, but after you make your choice, you can see the running tally of Red vs Blue.

“Lemme pick Blue. If everyone picks Blue, there’s no problem. Oh crap, some people are picking Red. Hey, the rest of you Need to save me! Pick Blue! Saaaaaaave meeeeeee!!!! Haaaaalp!!!”

“Lemme pick Red. Why would ANYONE pick Blue? If everyone picks Red, there’s no problem. Oh look, some people are picking Blue. Well, there’s no fixing stupid. At least I know I made the safe, smart choice and get to sit back and see how this plays out”.

Blue. And I will sleep with a clean conscience for however many nights I have left, even if that's only a partial up until the last votes come in. If I press red, I am already dead.
