Random Thought Thread

If I believe in something beyond the material world, I have to answer accordingly.

Blue may be decluded by humanist standards, but it is mandatory by the standard of my beliefs. Which is interesting because there have been many attempts throughout history to kill as many people with those beliefs as possible. This vote looks like it would do it.
I’m seeing it this way. The quote is from a 1611 translation so excuse the spelling. But if any provide not for his owne, & specially for those of his owne house, hee hath denied the faith, and is worse then an infidel.

It’s interesting.

What I initially thought was an overly simple thought exercise, becomes complicated because of human emotion. It even leads to odd reasoning for why the Blue button is the ‘better’ choice when it defies logic.

This isn’t even like the game show conundrum, where contestants are given the choice of two buttons; one button gives you ALL the money. The other button SPLITS the money between the two of you.

If both contestants choose ALL, you both get nothing.

If one chooses ALL, and the other chooses SPLIT, the one who chose ALL gets all of it, the one who picked SPLIT gets nothing.

If both choose SPLIT, each gets half.

THAT at least poses a choice worthy of consideration. If you’re both greedy, you both get nothing. If you’re fair, but the other person isn’t, you might get nothing, while they get it all. If you’re both fair, you both walk away winners. If you’re greedy, and you think they’re going to be fair, you could walk away with all of it. What do you choose?

This choice, on the other hand, I don’t get it. There’s no logic to picking Blue.

Suicidally empathetic. That’s a good one. I’ll definitely have to remember that one.

Does it make more sense to pick Blue or Red? It’s simple. Let’s assume you’re neither first, nor last, but after you make your choice, you can see the running tally of Red vs Blue.

“Lemme pick Blue. If everyone picks Blue, there’s no problem. Oh crap, some people are picking Red. Hey, the rest of you Need to save me! Pick Blue! Saaaaaaave meeeeeee!!!! Haaaaalp!!!”

“Lemme pick Red. Why would ANYONE pick Blue? If everyone picks Red, there’s no problem. Oh look, some people are picking Blue. Well, there’s no fixing stupid. At least I know I made the safe, smart choice and get to sit back and see how this plays out”.

^ this guy gets it

So you're inviting me to a religious debate in the CPK forum?

Red carries a twofold implication, guaranteed personal survival, and the willful particiaption in a possible, if not probable outcome of ideological genocide. It ties the former to the latter. There was a place I read (paraphrased) don't do evil expecting good to come of it.

But judging people for having an opinion that's against yours is bogus

Play your hand , we are human... choices are choices (they can work in extremes each way)

Voting blue is a gamble. Pure and simple. A bad one at that.

Talking consequences. I pick red I survive and maybe some of my family and friends do too. I pick blue I likely die and I’m no use to anyone.

To pick blue is to foolishly and unjustifiably place misguided trust in your fellow man to make the selfless choice. IMHO
They're both gambles. Red is gambling with the lives of half the population and blue is gambling with their own lives. The chance of winning is not necessarily the same for each. It's futile to deny the symmetry of the problem and continuously re-frame it to make only one side look good.

Seems directed at me, so I will reply: The beliefs I hold have taught me that certain actions are evil. Many people throughout history have felt judged when hearing such beliefs, and sometimes become angry, some angry enough to kill.

Playing my hand with this button thought experiemnt is to state I would press blue, and why. Nothing more, nothing less.

Meant to add, you can care that I believe there is evil attached to pressing red. Or you can not care. That's your choice to make.

I would press blue also not only because I like blue and hope the button lights up after I press it.... but i kind of would love to think humanity with the possibly of losing would choose the good for the multiple vs the singular

But at the same time i would love to have the thought in my head I don't need to state why I choose what I choose and why...... just that others would like to see others safe

We live in a world where not everyone sees things the same way. Whether it's politics, religion, ergonomics, geometry, or heat treatment. But I still believe in dialogue, and encouraging others to see our perspectives, as well as being willing to alter our own, given sufficient cause.

But the Englund Gambit in chess is a crap defense for Black and you'll never convince me otherwise. :p
