Sometimes having a bad memory has its bonuses ... like today when I found paperwork from a transaction I made with TreasuryDirect.gov in October 2022, I forgot I made, when I Bonds were hot. Score! If I would've croaked - no-one in my family would've known about it and the US Gov would've had $12k of unclaimed funds to piss away on my behalf.

Dude, I got a bill for electricity and gas for the month, and you know, it’s a pretty hefty amount.

You know what I think? It’s probably yours too, just with my name on it. I’ll send it to you — you’ll pay it, Timmy? 🤗

Tomorrow I have to drive again — 450 miles, actually even a bit more, around 500. I want to stop by one place while I’m still in the area where I am now.

My wife bought a special bag and gel ice packs. Thanks to that, even after 12-14 hours everything in the bag stays perfectly cold, so I drink ice-cold drinks the whole way.

What tips or tricks do you have for long drives?

Basically, ways to make spending such a long time behind the wheel a bit more bearable?

For example, I keep eating something steadily throughout the trip and take a couple of 30-40 minute breaks where I always get out of the car and walk around.

And some good music, loud enough 😅

I've driven from Wa to SC and back at least 6 times in the last 4 years. Kinda lost count now with out really thinking about it. Route I usually take is just over 3k miles, one way.

Wife and I hate driving more than 8 hours in a day, and are fortunate we generally dont have to.

On a 6,000 mile motorcycle trip, I had multiple 800 mile days back to back when trying to get to my destinations (or back home) expeditiously.

I've also done 800 mile days several times going from South FL to NC, or WV and back. (Waynesville, NC to Key Biscayne in about 11 hours.)

Pretty much the same limit behind the wheel of a car for one day. Don't think I'd be as inclined to repeat those currently.

Some of the important factors when doing long drives are the nature of the road and the scenery , whether the drive is mainly on major FWYs or the 2 lane byways, the topography and then rest stop facilities, gas stations, food, etc. I think that weather and road conditions are the most crucial factors.

Personally speaking with Cali being a long arse state with all kinds of diverse topography and sceneries, from south to north, I have easily done 500-600 miles one way trips in the past although I do not do these trips as often these days (same with going a bit east ward in to AZ and NV although thru more mundane roads). I once drove the 1100 miles from San Diego to So. OR in one day which was quite rough and I definitely would not recommend. Funnily enough. I also drove similar distant, two way trip to the Bay Area in one day many years ago which did not bother me as much, but I was quite a bit younger back then. These trips were solo, not co-pilots.

I adore all these stories. No one actually enjoys sitting behind the wheel for 8-10 hours a day on a trip.

But for some reason, everyone always looks back on it fondly afterwards, like it’s something warm and comforting. These stories almost always end up sounding positive and pleasant.

We don’t have a built-in fridge in our car, so what we came up with is pretty simple: just make one ourselves and put it in the trunk.
