I'm a firm believer in masks helping. Well before this virus reared its ugly head.

Let me paint you a picture. I normally wear an n95 daily in my lab and at times even a reusable respirator with vapor filters all depends on what I'm making. So do the people I work with directly in our lab. The rest of the retail portion/specialty portion of the pharmacy normally (before all this) does not. A common cold in our store usually meant most of the staff would end up with it at one point or another. Hard not spread something when sharing phones, computers, conversations etc. It just happens and this is even after constant cleaning with isopropyl alcohol throughout the day.
My team and my lab are rarely affected by these "store bugs" and I believe in part is because we are normally wearing a mask for the majority of the work day. Just before lockdown went into effect here I had them adopt a mandatory mask protocol all over our store whether it be the lab or retail/specialty portion of the pharmacy. We even made our delivery drivers wear one.

This is for 3 reasons. First is protection from direct exposure to sick patients. Second is to protect our patients if we end up having the infection or are asymptomatic ourselves. Irrespective of what category we fall into none of us want to contribute to the spread of this.... Third is protection from co worker to co worker transmission. I constantly remind everyone that whatever they happen to do outside of work is brought in with them to work the following day. If everyone is wearing a mask during their entire shift it offers a piece of mind that one we hopefully won't pick it up or two we won't spread it amongst our staff.

I wear my mask for you and you wear your mask for me.

I personally think at this time if the general populous were wearing a mask/facial covering it would have a significant impact on the reach of this virus. Just remember to wear and remove it appropriately. It also serves as a reminder to keep your hands off your face.

tinfoil hat timmy tinfoil hat timmy .... Gerald Gibson .... You wanted a name. He was only 29. My wife's co-worker and friend to many in our community.

Currently have 4 friends fighting the infection. One of which is now in ICU. Many other friends and family currently in battle on hospital turf. I hope I don't have any more names for you.

It. Is. Real.
I hope you don’t either.
One name is too many.

Renato, I’m very sorry for your loss. I’m sorry that I couldn’t like the post, not because of the message which it conveyed but because losing a friend or acquaintance stings, more so when that young.

TinFoil is not a bad guy, Nathan had said so and I happen to believe him. TFHT is out there for sure but we can agree that he’s not malicious with his intentions. JMHO.

Not a dig at you, but a dig at Dr. Fauci and the other talking heads pushing this.

I don't agree with it being presented in this manner either.

My observations over many years is that unlike you and your colleagues, the vast majority of people are selfish and inconsiderate.

I can't tell you how many times people who are very obviously sick, will come up close to talk to me or another person. In fact, half the time, they'll come even closer than normal, speaking in an even softer voice to emphasize how sick they are.

It's not that they're ignorant of how most respiratory illnesses spread, and that proximity greatly increases the danger of transmission. The exact same people who will try to come close when they're sick, in turn, will tell other people, "Oh, you're sick. I'm going to stay away from you because I don't want to catch it".

It's because most people are inconsiderate PsOS. They know that proximity increases the risk of transmission, and will keep their distance if they think someone else is sick, because they don't want to catch it, but when they're sick, the mentality is, "Oh well..." and they don't care if they get anyone else sick.

When Dr. Fauci says, "This virus can be spread asymptomatically before you even know you're sick. Your mask protects me, and my mask protects you", the inconsiderate folks go, "Oh. Well if the mask isn't protecting me, then I'm not going to bother. It's uncomfortable. It's inconvenient. I'm too vain and I don't like the way it looks... etc.", because they don't care about infecting everyone around them, if it turns out that they're the ones who are Covid-19 positive.

How many stories have we read, of Covid-19 patients breaking quarantine to go to a father-daughter dance, a private social etc.?

Again, tell them the truth; It reduces the viral load. Both, the potential viral load the wearer might spew into the environment, AND the viral load the wearer might be subjected to, if they're unwittingly exposed to someone who's infected.

This is far more likely to gain widespread compliance, because all the selfish a-holes will go, "Oh... so it protects me", and actually do it.

How to work in the Coronapoclypse.. PAPR’s! I bought this thing months ago to help me live for my daughter as the fumes and dust associated with what I do is a real concern. Now it’s even more useful. I’m still laid off but I’ve been pleading with them that I’m safe even though nobody else is LOL.

Our local hospital is in extremely short supply of masks right now to the point where they are now developing protocols to re-sterilize single-use masks so they can re-use them.

ANY mask is better than no mask. We only leave the house to go grocery shopping these days. 2 weeks ago, only ~30% of people had masks on. Last Sunday, 80%+ people had masks. Even if they aren't 100% effective, they STILL help.

Thanks man. I just try to think critically is all. If i cant confirm something for myself, I tend to be a bit skeptical. I dunno. Do what You want.

I would wrap toilet paper around my head as an impromptu mask, but I'm out of that too.;):D

In all seriousness, it is sad that frontline medical personnel that REALLY need the masks do not have enough. :(

Toilet paper mask??? We have ourselves a $$$BALLER$$$ over here :D

But in all seriousness, it's super sad. We donated several boxes of N95 masks we had lying around from the H1N1 outbreak to the local hospital. I think the medical professionals need it more than us right now.

I'm also looking into decontamination procedures for 3M N95 masks. 3M doesn't recommend any treatment at higher temperatures (I was going to either steam sterilize or autoclave/pressure cook) but I found a study that demonstrated minimal impact to filter efficacy after 1 autoclave cycle (but not more).

Our local hospital is using vaporized hydrogen peroxide to sterilize and re-use N95 masks. The sterilization protocol was developed and tested at the University of Nebraska. They are asking all staff to not wear any makeup or creams on their faces, to avoid contaminating the masks and preventing sterilization and re-use. They mark each mask with the number of times it's been sterilized, and discard them after 5 uses.

Most studies I found said VHP is an effective! I wonder if there's any way to DIY the stuff at home in a controlled setting using ultrasonic vaporizers...

For a very long time, prior to Covid-19 making hydrogen peroxide & 70% isopropyl alcohol become very sought after items, I had been mixing them in a ratio of approximately 4:1 in plastic spray bottles mostly for cleaning and sanitizing fabric surfaces where my pets sleep, in between doing laundry. I didn't want to use products like Lysol because I believed them to be toxic for pet sheets and mats.

My point was that you are not intentionally a bad person but you ought to know that you have rubbed many people the wrong way and that is on you TFHT.

Critical thinking is really an excellent approach to most things as it engages the brain to be inquisitive and curious, naught wrong with that but where a person researches and what that person decides to give credence to is also very, very important. Critical thinking on its own without credible research (sources & methods) really leads to no where that is any good. My 2 Cs.
