Random Thought Thread

I'm also looking into decontamination procedures for 3M N95 masks. 3M doesn't recommend any treatment at higher temperatures (I was going to either steam sterilize or autoclave/pressure cook) but I found a study that demonstrated minimal impact to filter efficacy after 1 autoclave cycle (but not more).
Are you talking about medical use or personal use? The SARS-CoV-2 virus isn't that hard to kill, if that is the primary/sole pathogen of concern.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3078131/

Can't find the paper at the moment, but 70c/158f for 30 minutes also inactivates the virus (bake it in an oven).

Since you mentioned an autoclave though, I'll assume you may be talking about medical reuse, in which case, SARS-CoV-2 is not the only pathogen of concern, and many of the other pathogens can't be heat sterilized before compromising the N95 masks.

Again, I'll have to look for the paper, but UV-C sterilization is a viable option. It would require knowing/measuring the UV-C output of the bulb you're using, so you can calculate the dosage provided at the distance to the masks.

Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide is very effective, but you need to figure out a way to force it through the mask.

Also, it's important to keep in mind that N95 masks being saved for sterilization/reuse need to be in a NON-airtight container. They collect a lot of moisture from exhalation, and need to be able to dry out, otherwise they'll quickly start growing mold/mildew, posing other risks.

Adding to BM_1's excellent info: I heard that if something is contaminated and then refrigerated, this Virus will not vanquish by refrigeration or even by freezing. Please be sure to run your produce under warm / hot water if possible (then refrigerate if the produce tastes better when left in the fridge).

That's correct. Cold actually preserves the virus.

In another Covid-19 related news:

A 32 YO female ER patient who became quite irritated when another ER patient, the 86 YO Mrs. Janie Marshall (allegedly while disoriented) grabbed her IV pole thus encroaching her personal space and the recommended 6 feet of social distancing, shoved Mrs. Marshall resulting in the elderly patient to lose balance hitting her head resulting in her death!

I really like hearing the coronavirus stuff on here. I think as long as politics is left out it's really nice to hear from each other in these desperate times

Plenty of places to go for corona virus info, just like the thread Lorien shut down or any number of other ones, but seems to me that a thread labeled "Random Thought Thread" should stick to that rather than require the reader to go through chapter after chapter of other than random thoughts.

I'm sure I don't speak for everyone, perhaps for no one, but it is my opinion, expressed in a thread that is appropriate for the subject. Beyond that, I am outta here.............................

I think it's such an important subject at the moment it makes 'random' thoughts a bit trivial. I know I get comfort coming in here and hearing from some knowledgeable guys.
