Random Thought Thread

Towards the end of one of our hikes this past weekend the sun was going down. My younger son said, “Well, if we have to spend the night in the woods, at least Dad has a knife.”
My wife said, “Knowing your father he probably has one for you too.”
To which I replied, “I have one for each of us (four). I also have three flashlights on me, so we should be okay.”

We made it back to the cabin well before dark.

Good answer!

Personally, I like thin and light in a knife, especially when dealing with many of the super steels since they can do it just fine. Years ago I sold off everything 5/32” and up. Now 1/8” seems overkill.

Typically, with thin geometry you get a great cutter, which is all I’m after. But then theres Nathan’s video showing the performance of his 3/16....
I don't want to derail the Ask Nathan a question thread, but if you could buy DEK1, it is a very good cutter. It's thinner them FK2, and it's cuts very well. Plus it's carries better due to smaller handle (but you can get good grip even with large hands).

When you have your first kid you are extremely careful about everything, even before they arrive. I remember reading in a “children’s names” book to be conscious of the initials so you don’t accidentally end up with something awkward. And in fact, we changed the traditional spelling of our first sons name to avoid the initials “CDC” - his are KDC.
Somehow we forgot all that with the second kid and his initials ended up DMC, which had a ring to it for some reason and we often called him by his initials. It wasn’t until his first soccer game that I realized why his initials had that ring to it. As I found myself yelling, “Run DMC!” and then chuckling.
So many things to consider with kids names. It's Tricky. :p

The last time I was in a power outage away from home, (power went out just after dark). After asking to borrow one of my flashlights, someone asked, "Why do you have so many flashlights on you?". I replied, "Because of folks like you" ;).

I had 5.

- An old 4/7s Quark that runs on either a 14500 LiIon or a AA, AAA or even AAAA (pull apart a 9v battery and there are 6 AAAA cells inside to make the 9v. Using a couple dollar bills rolled around an AAAA cell to hold it centered in the barrel, and a balled up piece of aluminum foil to reach the contacts, and the light runs in the low modes). I keep a 14500 in it, for the 400+ lumen bright mode.
- a keychain twisty that runs on 1xAAA that has a Nichia 219 high-CRI emitter
- 3 Streamlight Nano lights on the keychain. Output is about equivalent to a cellphone light. They'll run continuously on the batteries for 12+ hours, without draining the batteries on a person's primary emergency communications device (cellphone). They're cheap enough to give away without a 2nd thought.

The plus side of just about everyone having a smartphone these days, is that they at least have an emergency light source. I remember back in the 80s, being in an old mall with friends when the power went out. I had a Maglite Solitaire (1xAAA incandescent. Years after LED flashlights were common, I was talking about flashlights and mentioned it, when someone said, "Ahhhh... I remember those. About as bright as a match... but with shorter runtime" :p).

That old mall didn't have skylights, and half the emergency lights were dead, so parts of it were pitch black. Aside from the security guard, I was the only other person with a flashlight back then. The only other light sources were the smokers with their lighters (Zippos can at least be lit, and held by the base. Using a Bic for any extended period gets uncomfortable quickly).

I've noticed that strawberries have been getting larger over the years. But they seem to have crossed a threshold for me now that they're about the size of an apple. This is officially weird.

At some point they're going to have to start keeping them over with the melons?

they're obviously breeding for size, but I'm not sure they're giving a great deal of attention to flavor. These taste like water. You maybe could call it a "watermelon", but I think that name's been taken

I used to edc the streamlight microstream (AAA) because of its price and the S-clip which allows it to be mounted on my hats bill. I came across a place selling them for $12 so I bought seven of them as lights to give to others. I think I have one left - still in package. I have moved onto the Olight I3T. Pretty much the same light but has two brightness settings instead of just one.
The streamlights were all given to maintenance persons at the facilities I work in regularly.

Growing up with a name like that... did he become really bitter, one tough mofo, or one of those super ambivalent "Meh, whatever..." types. School would've been brutal.

He seemed like a nice old man. It was about 1968 and he was in his 70's then I think. We moved shortly after he moved in across the street, so I didn't get to know him very well.

That's one of the reasons i chose the 1xAAA light I have:
- 3 modes. It turns on in Medium, and will run about 8 hours at ~40 lumens. Quick twist Off and back On, and it cycles to Moonlight, which runs for ~80 hours, then High which is ~120 lumens for about an hour.
- the Nichia high-CRI emitter makes it much easier to discern colors, whether it's determining if that's a green wire with a yellow stripe, or blue wire with a white stripe. Or ID'ing cyanosis.
- I prefer either twist head lights for pocket carry (won't accidentally turn on and drain the battery) or the Quark's flush reverse clicky tailcap (never had that accidentally turn on either, where I've had protruding forward clicky lights turn on in my pocket). It's also why I switched from Photon squeeze lights to the Streamlight Nano lights for the keychain. The squeeze lights would inevitably get squeezed in my pocket, and be dead when they were needed.

Mine is the Rev2 version of this

Hmmm... the word might not have had the same connotations at the turn of the century, when he was in school. Back then another word would have simply meant "a bundle of sticks".

Nathan you ought to make an axe to get that outta your system too. Please no boutique-type fancy schmancy hatchets. Some mean ol' bastid of a splitting axe which disembowels with a half swing. Call it the NCORTEYMOFOS Axe! That name will give any Busse stuff a run for the money ;)
