Where were you, what song?
I was the opposite...couldn't stand grunge (still not a fan, but got used to it)."Smells like teen spirit". It wasn't on the radio. I'd never even heard of Nirvana.
Once upon a time, a long time ago, MTV used to play music video on the TV and they were really pretty cutting edge for what they were. I was fortunate and my dad had some pretty ridiculous speakers hooked up to the TV so it was a legit sound system compared to the little speaker that comes on the front of those old CRT TV's that were old enough that they put the word "color" on the front of them so you'd know it wasn't some shitty B&W unit.
I was on the phone with somebody, I don't remember who, and that song came on. I told the person I was talking to that I had to go and I'd talk to them later. I turned it up and gave it my full attention. It was so different and such a refreshing antithesis to the overproduced synthesizer makeup and big hair garbage that was the music of the late 80's early 90's. There's so much false nostalgia now for that era but I'm here to tell you the popular music was really bad. And this totally different sound was what I needed. I still stop what I'm doing and turn it up if I hear it come on.
For me it was The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I heard Uplift Mofo Party Plan as a kid and hid it from my parents because I knew they wouldn’t get it and it made me a little uncomfortable compared to everything else I’d ever heard."Smells like teen spirit". It wasn't on the radio. I'd never even heard of Nirvana.

Big hair garbage!? We're not going to take it!"Smells like teen spirit". It wasn't on the radio. I'd never even heard of Nirvana.

I wouldn't say that I couldn't stand grunge, but the first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit, I had the same reaction many folks did, "What the heck are they saying/singing?! I think I heard "Entertain us" and "Hello, hello, hello"?I was the opposite...couldn't stand grunge (still not a fan, but got used to it).
Yeah, had no idea...guess that's why Weird Al did a parody. But in general, the music just seemed so "muddy"...couldn't get into it.I wouldn't say that I couldn't stand grunge, but the first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit, I had the same reaction many folks did, "What the heck are they saying/singing?! my musical life was born from and revolved around grunge. I'd made my way from top 40 to the Manchester sound, not really taking an interest either way. And the came the grunge, where I still frequently find myself. Those were the concerts I'd ditch everything to get to, all those Lollapaloozas and underground bars along the college circuit. Those days are long over but as reckless and risky and as self destructive as that time was, I'm grateful for the wisdom I have now. That thing about grunge that spoke to me the most was its honesty and, in its early days, its demand for liberty. And the sounds, of course. I like my music raw
Didn't have an issue with the style of music. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Bush etc. were fine.Yeah, had no idea...guess that's why Weird Al did a parody. But in general, the music just seemed so "muddy"...couldn't get into it.
I have a patriotic cat. Happy 4th!
