Any chance of seeing S35VN on that list in the near future?(sorry, don't have one available)
Thanks for all the tests. You have costed me allot of money buying all these new knife steels. I used to be happy with a soft hardened S30V.
Question, what knife did you test the S60V on?
never saw a production from that steel
I finally got on the M390 bandwagon and got a Benchmade 805 in M390. I will carry it along with one of my M4 Millies so I can compare M390 side by side with my beloved M4. If you want another data point for M390 I can ship the blade off for testing, Jim.
Mike
How about some M2 HSS? I'm just itching to see how it compares... It's not boxed up, but can quickly get there!![]()
How about 20CV? I remember seeing a video you made on YouTube with the SOG Team Leader. Don't know if you still have it, but it would be interesting to compare it to M390.If I can get my hands on one to test then yeah.![]()
Maybe, maybe not. I've heard that the steel was run real soft because of the issues with the edge chipping. Now even though ZDP-189 holds an edge longer than S30V, I find that the steel's tendency to chip makes it harder to touch up to full sharpness on a strop than a rolled edge. Plus I chipped the tip twice on ZDP-189, though never got any chips on S30V.So changing from 440V(S60V) to S30V was a downgrade....

So I suppose it would depend on your intended use. S60V would make a better light cutter, but S30V would be better for hard use.
As far as straight edge retention yes S60V is better than S30V, but S30V is tougher.
The M2 HSS Sodak is going to send is one I expect big things from provided it's his full hardness blade.
That's the one I predict will be two categories higher than the RC 58-60 ( average) that Benchmade ran theirs at. If I had any M2 blades left besides my old Nimravus Partially serrated model You would be/are welcome to use it if it's usable/useful to you.
I do have a S35VN mule you are welcome to use if you want Jim. Let me know if either will be of any use.I'll get them to you ASAP. Joe
Edit: I forgot. I also have an unused 52100 mule with no grip on it, as well as a Ratmandu in 52100. I have others in this steel but they are very convex ground.

Yes sir, power hacksaw blade, should be in the 65 - 66 Hrc range. If it does well, I'll get it tested for hardness.
The Mules would be great, but I can't use serrated blades in the rope cutting for rankings
Jim, I'll arrange to get them over to you. How soon do you want them?
The 5200 mule is set up differently from the rest of the mules so the Halpern Titanium grips I use don't work. I no longer have a shop so I have to wait for good weather for wood work and other stuff so I'm getting behind on that.
The S35VN has grips on it. Joe
