Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? :D

Poor Jim, he's probably getting elbow surgery from all the repetitive motion...

Going to start cutting again tomorrow, needed a break from it.

I hope your arms stay healthy, we are getting some great info from your testing. I really look forward to seeing how that M2 performs. I really need to get an angle grinder to start shaping those M2 hacksaw blades that Sodak sent me. I'm hoping to have a new top on my workbench in the next couple of weeks so I can mount up my reloading gear and hopefully a belt sander and other good power goodies on a good solid base.

It does wear on you after awhile so a break is needed after so much cutting. :)

It would be interesting to see the scrapivore tested, (SR101 at whats suppose to be 64hrc) but same blade length as the swamp warden so is probably to short as well. If you are interested I'd be willing to let you test mine, let me know.

I was curious about that as well. Seems like it would hold quite an edge at that hardness, but I can't imagine that steel has a lot of carbides at all. Still, seems like a steel that pays off all that stropping by holding that razor edge longer.

Its probably already been asked ,for that I apoligize. What knife did u use for the m390? Been wanting to give this steel another try after such a dissapointment with the mpr. I actually traded mpr off for a lumlfti cause of this , yet to try the m4 on it but it was a pain in the ass to sharpen . I'm guessing from this I lucked out and got a higher end hardness one from bm . Would not sharpen on sharpmaker had to bust out edge pro reperofiled whole thing ,way to thick

I think the rodent solution is the perfect blade for the test. I would send in mine but it has a convex edge. And I would miss it.

The factory blades tested were BM 710's and only at 60 HRC, they should be higher at 61 HRC IMO.

The Customs (Not in the rankings) were Phil Wilson's at 62 HRC.

I'd recommend either the 581 Barrage or AFCK in M390. Neither one should have a recurve and both have great ergos. I like the 581 over the 710-1 for some odd reason:D.

I actually like the slight recurve on 790. But I think the knife that will give m390 its second chance with me will be that new bm knifeworks exclusive coming out .

Woo Hoo!!!! :D

Paul,

Cut with the M2 saw blade today.

It did well, better than I thought it would, but it is very thin so I think that helped it a lot.

I can't use it in the rankings because it started out too low at 10 LBS of downforce.

I do think it's too thin and too hard because the edge started to chip out so maybe a 40 degree inclusive edge would work better on this blade.

Jim

Hey jim, one more quick question I was just pondering. What Busse did u use ? I. Know my boss street had some fat shoulders I took back .

I can't remember the model right now, but it was thin and hollow ground so it worked out great.
