Rare GECs

Roland, I believe Mike Latham has said the quality on those Schrades was at least as good as the GEC branded knives, and he's seen more of all of them than just about anyone. They have very nice bone as well.

the gec schrades are excellent in construction & finish. whether or not they will have collector interest is unknown but for a great user the quality is excellent.--dennis

Dennis collectibility doesn't concern me. I just buy what i like, and these may have a "Schrade" branding but they are 100% GEC knives. As with about 50% of all folders ever made, the branding name is not the manufacturer, so in my organization of my knives, i group them by manufacturer. The names they happen to be marked with, i see as incidental.

One of my first GEC purchases. I believe it's one of nine. Pic makes the front look much darker than the back, but it's actually not as bad a match as it apprears.

Liked it so much I had to get another. Supposedly the EO drop points are all rare, but I don't know how many of these were made.

I don't have the numbers for all of these but they should count.
#661210J Jack White Pearl Looking Glass 1 of 8 no serial number
#661311 Calf Roper Black Micarta 1 of 9 no serial number

Thought I'd add this knife to your appropriately named thread, Jeff!
I lucked into this one of a very short run; this the only one with exterior or bark material. (Pre-ban) Ebay smooth bone - ahem!:D

Nice score Charlie! I bet somebody had fun pinning those scales in place.

This one should fit in here too. It's 1 of 7 according to the production totals. #56 Tidioute with Coconut Palm scales.

Nice find, Charlie. That pattern is a real Pachyderm in more ways than one. Congrats!

Nice to see this thread get some (dog) legs!;)
Nice one Dan!
Thanks for the heavy comment, Rick!!

Thanks Charlie. I added a pic to my previous post that shows the scales a little better. I'm glad you brought this thread back. Hopefully we'll get some more examples.

Thanks for the extra pic, Dan.
It shows how amazing those scales are! The graphic pattern implies traditional jigging, yet the surface appears silky smooth; the colors hint at chocolate and smoky scotch, and the roundness of grip brings us back to the golden Era of Cutlery!
A fine vintage!! Aged in the pocket and brought into contact with fresh fruits and vegetables, it will develop a fine patina and bode excellent health for the owner!!
You are blessed to own such a thing!!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving (this monday!)!!:D

Charlie, absolute top-notch "Toenail". I think it's very collectible and might be viewed with even more awe in 75 years time.
It's my 65th birthday today should you be thinking of 'gifting' it.

Happy Big One, Roland!
I hope you enjoy your "golden" status, young feller!
Also hope you have spent some nice time with family and friends!

GEC #72 Red Elk Stag, #09 of 23. Factory Test Run. GEC had a lot of problems producing the scales and said they won't do it again. They also made a few with wharncliffe blades, 27 I think.

Thanks for the pics, Trand.

I was wondering how the Red Elk would look and I would have to say that it turned out pretty good. Nice photos.

Thanks Rick. I bought it sight unseen. In fact, I haven't seen one at a dealer yet?

Great knife Trand. Which label is it under? I guess my real question is, is it GEC stainless or is it 1095?

Nathan

Nathan, the bottom picture of the pile side tang reads, "CYCLOPS STEEL WORKS." That's the surest indicator that it is 440C, under the GEC branding.

1095 knives have "TITUSVILLE IRON WORKS" on the tang. Used to be all knives with the acorn shield were 440C, but some of their newer fixed blades have carbon steel and acorn shields.

Thanks Jeff. I tried my darndest but without my contacts or glasses I couldn't read the tang. The acorn shield is what made me ask because I thought it indicated GEC brand. Then again, the threaded bolsters threw me off because I thought that was a Tidouette or Northfield feature. Step away from GEC for a few months and the whole darn system gets flipped upside down! :p :D
