Rare GECs

Reeled-in another one: A "Factory Test" #57 in Kingwood. Number 07 of 7 made.

That blade seems to have a very high polish finish. GEC moving to crocus....Really offset by those bolsters too, pretty knife!
What is Kingwood? Not heard of this before.

Thanks, Will

Really a great looking knife. The blades and the handles look pretty cool. I hope this will go in serial production!

Kind regards
Andi

Andi, the 57 has just been re-issued with Clip as master, many scale choices but I think this Kingwood is an ultra rare option.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I had a chance to grab one of these new #57s in ancient kauri, but I went with the Kingwood as the rarer and slightly more unusual (for GEC) option.

From Wikipepia:

"Kingwood is a classic furniture wood, almost exclusively used for inlays on very fine furniture. Occasionally it is used in the solid for small items and turned work, including parts of billiard cues, e.g., those made by John Parris. It is brownish-purple with many fine darker stripes and occasional irregular swirls [...].

The wood is very dense and hard and can be brought to a spectacular finish. It turns well but due to its density and hardness it can be difficult to work with hand tools. It also has a tendency to blunt tools due to its abrasive properties.

It is available only in small sizes (it is yielded by a smallish tree, Dalbergia cearensis, restricted to a small area in Brazil). Other woods yielded by the same genus are cocobolo, rosewood, blackwood and tulipwood."

Will, the blade polish is just average for a Northfield; actually not quite as bright as the stag version I just received. My pocket camera photography skills aren't always up to conveying the blade finishes accurately.

I've been looking for one of these puppies for quite a while: A #62 Courthouse whittler in Genuine stag. Far as I know, there were eight made with serial numbers, and one non-serialized. This is the latter. Pretty decent amber-colored stag, too. :)

Prize stag there! I like the colour on that and the texture, must feel like the ultimate worry-stone!
Oh, the rest of the knife isn't too bad either:D:D

Thanks, Will

Hey Rick...just how do you do it my friend?...you have managed to find some extremely attractive ( and RARE ) knives...thank you for showing us these beauties!!!
GEC absolutely ROCK!!!!!!
The Courthouse Whittler, the Stag is real nice, i take it this is a split spring?...I never use my Whittlers..yet I just love then to bits...maybe in time my change in taste may take this inactivity over and command me to be more proactive in the use of these cleverly made knives.
Thanks Rick, I always enjoy your posts mate :D:thumbup:

The look great Rick!!
These are the latest I picked up. 2 of the Brown dyed Curly Maple (FTR) and Cherry jigged bone made (middle two). 3 of the Amber Grizzly Cut bone and Tractor Red jigged bone #48s.

Trand, that cherry jigged bone is nice and rich looking and really stands out, but of course they're all very good pickups. Congrats!

The Tractor Red is awesome.

I've been holding this one for a while and only recenlty started putting it to use.

This one had no etching or serial number. It came along a run with "jade bone" a while back.

I checked the production totals for 2010 and I think it was a special run. Only 3 made.
