Rat cutlery or Ontario?

I may be completely wrong about this, but whe RAT Cutlery left Ontario, the "politics" over naming rights and such began. Somewhere, in the contract and trademarking, Ontario managed to keep their RAT line, and would not let RAT Cutlery leave with their full naming rights. Ontario, has the "rights" to continue to make the Rat 3, Rat 4, etc. However, RAT Cutlery can't, because of politics. So now knives made the standard that RAT Cutlery demands are produced by Rowan. And Of Course RAT can't call there current knives RAT 3 or RAT 4, because Ontario own those model names. So now RAT Cutlery makes the RC3, RC4, RC5, etc. These are the official RAT knives. I hope tis is coherent. It it was lacking in clarity, you will find a good amout of info on RAT Cutlery's Makers section on this forum.

From 2002 to 2007 Ontario had a 5 year agreement to produce and sell knives under the RAT name.

It expired in 2007, and RAT did not renew due to so many quality control problems with Ontario's knives. Ontario then attempted to steal the RAT name and stop RAT from using it.

oh well, there are worse things to do when drunk than entertain oneself with pointless converations about knife company politics :D

OBTW, I have an RC3, I freaking live that knife. Great fit and finish, and begging to chop shit up.

Wow. This sounds so much like some of the inter-company politics I experienced when doing a simple review of a tactical knife that, under one name, was stellar, but under another, garbage. Same knife, different owners and marketing.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the politics between these knife makers. Many of them are good guys, but some are little more than self-impressed buffoons. Some even set up entire forums to promote their products. ;)

Thanks for some discussion of the RAT/Ontario ordeal. It was announced that Ontario now has acquired the Ranger line of knives. So I wonder if they will go with that line instead of the RAT series since the controversy turned alot of people against Ontario.

I bought an Ontario RAT3 a couple of years ago. When it arrived in my mail box I discovered a couple of QC defects. I contacted Mike Perrin and he apologized for the inconvenience and had Ontario send me a new knife.

So yeah, Ontario QC, hit or miss.
Integrity of RAT Cutlery- Top Notch.
No question as to whom I will deal with in the future.

dude, you're treading on very thin ice here. Many of us have experienced the generosity and friendship of Mike and Jeff. it would not be good to try to take cheap potshots at them.

For the record, it's NOT THE SAME KNIFE! Read up and do some homework before opening your mouth about something you don't know about.

Brett

No, I think you are treading on thin ice. Generosity is not the issue - unless you're saying that your loyalties have already been bought. Of course, I named no individuals, but you, for some reason, have chosen to do so. Do you have specifics? Do you know what you're talking about?

Why not make your case, now, if you can. Otherwise, shut up.

Ha. You need to read more and post less. It's more than generosity. Many of us know each other out of this venue.

Trolling is trolling. it's not hard to read into your ignorant statements.

And yes, there are LOTS of specifics and they're all posted in the public forum. the onus is on YOU to do some homework before popping off with ignorant statements. READ MORE POST LESS.

Brett

I'm sure it's not hard for you to read ignorance into statements, you troll.

As for me, I'm just a collector. I don't shill for manufacturers. I don't have to.

The onus is on you. You brought up the topic, named names, and made allegations.

When you graduate high school, come back.

alright, alright. I've let my emotions get the best of me. I'm sorry for doing so. You have every right to say what you please. I've come to know some of these guys at RAT and let my personal feelings drive my interactions with you.

Please accept my apology for being a butt.

Brett

LOL! Geez, BA, MA in philosophy. I'm pretty sure I've graduated high school.

You're awefully testy...:)

I get a bit irritated when people who obviously aren't meticulous enough to think clearly before making statements, make statements as you did.

But hey, welcome to BF.

brett

Philosophy - that's a paying gig. My background is in physics and science policy. Anyway, it's spelled "awfully". And, it is clear that you get irritated. No doubt about that.

Still, the ball's in your court. You made the allegations, named names, and began the name-calling. Follow up or shut up.

By all means, take your own advice and "put up or shut up." Do tell.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the politics between these knife makers. Many of them are good guys, but some are little more than self-impressed buffoons. Some even set up entire forums to promote their products.;)

Again, please post some examples. You wouldn't want to be accused of doing what you're saying bdws1975 is doing, right?

I've already apologized for being a prick.

However, I do stand by Rat.

these guys have integrity. More people could use a dose of that.

RAT? Why would you think I have anything against them? That makes no sense. I've never had a run-in with anyone from RAT. In fact, I thought I had posted earlier in their support, when it sounded like there was some type of intellectual property issue between them and another company. I have seen these types of politics before and do not like them. In fact, I'm looking forward to the RC-6. I have even posted this, before. And, quite frankly, I don't care what some other company thinks of the naming convention.

So, my apologies, as well.
