RAT E&E Kit

I'd like to mention coffee for the list of "things" we've got going. I'm sure there are ways to prolong it's shelf life, and every container of coffee I've seen in recent years of vaccum packed anyways. Making a few dozen smaller vaccum packed packages out of larger amounts would be a good idea I think.

I'm addicted bigtime and coffee would be on my "to get" list if stores were ransacked and my stash ran out...me an probably a million others.

I haven't gone a day in the past 10 or so years without coffee...I'm curious as to what would happen if I was cut off from it..

GASP no COFFEE.... I wouldn't wish to survive in such an uncivilized environment!

Jeeez... no Coffee? What would you guys do without me???

Brace yourself......I don't drink coffee! We have it in the house but I don't drink it. Every one in a while I'll have some but I could definately live without it. Not mr.coffee though. Don't alarmed! ;)

Will say 4/5 days after ike I would have considered stealing a candy bar from a toddler! Chocolate was on my list of must haves! Thank God for my wonderful chocoholic neighbor. He bought me a bag of kisses!

How do ya'll keep track of your goods? I had a spread sheet system going but the other members of the house are anti-keeping track. I like to know what's there so its easier to shop AND I wouldn't have to open doors, look under beds or in 'hiding places' in front of anyone if they wanted to barter an item.

I FIFO things and some ppl just shove things wherever there's space :shutters: not my style!

FIFO for us on all canned goods. We mark the date on top of everything we can.

In our house its me! I've thought about locking the door so no one could screw w my system. I like the pantry and cabinets organized and I live w some of the most unorganized people IN THE WORLD! Seriously, it's not that hard to put something back where you took it from is it? Must I go to a pre k style where I label the shelves?

Most forums don't like to talk about it, but Jeff seems to be pretty cool about it, so here goes:

Sometimes you have to do bad things to bad people to survive. There's no way around it and most people the world over understand this. We're quite soft in this country and our system is so f-ed up it paints the criminal as the victim.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if something really bad happened, a total collapse of society, there is a better than 75% chance that the person you will be dealing with on the "black market" will have been a stone-cold-felon before the collapse. Just because they have medications you or your family might need to survive doesn't mean they were a pharmacist before the event, it means they probably looted one.

An ounce of shit and he won't have to worry about making the next deal and I won't have to either. He won't have to worry about it and I won't have to haggle with someone else for quite some time because I'll take his.

That is reality and, yeah, that is something a lot of people don't want to talk about, but it's true. That's the way that environment works when bad things happen. I didn't invent it but I could swim in it if I had to.

Survival isn't fun, it isn't pretty, and I really hate it when discussion board commandos (no one here, yet) act like they wish it would happen, so they can go and run their own little world. They don't realize that they are far more likely to be the little fish than the shark.

I don't want to have to deal on a black market for medications or anything else I/we might need any more than I want to get Rx or MREs out of the back of a National Guard vehicle or at some collection/distribution point. Much like getting into The Superdome, you will probably have to give up certain things to get certain things and, make no mistake, everyone better remember Katrina, they will take your lifesaving gear if given half the chance.

Don't get me wrong, on some days, I DO wish someone would hit the reset button because I really think we need it in oh so many ways. But it's not because I like to talk tough at gun shows. I am sure those are the people you are referring to and I despise them as well.

Very nice kit.

I had a small one I made, but it is nothing like that. I am doctor so mine is just packed with meds, gauze, antibiotic creams, suture etc... never even thought to put a saw, or fishing kit or line in it. Just shows you how little I know. Considering I go to pretty remote areas in costa rica and panama I guess I was being stupid.

I will definitely get this kit and just some of my stuff to it.
thanks for the review

I think they're great kits! I've got two so far, one as a backup and the other I'm trying to beef up to suit my needs. Thanks for the great suggestions, guys!

Jeff, I was wondering about the plastic handcuff key...where can one get extras of those?

Thanks!

Those 2 cent pieces of plastic or very expensive, believe it or not. You might check with bestglide.com and see if they have them in stock. They stock them for our kits but be prepared to be shocked. They're like 3 or 4 bucks or so. We did our best to buy them in high quantity from the manufacturer to get the price down but they just wouldn't budge.

You could just include a bobby pin. Most standard handcuffs (the ones opened by that key) can be shimmed or picked rather easily. Teaches good survival skills. :D

Are these handcuff keys included as a gimmick, to make the kit stand out, or are they included based on feedback from personell who have needed that sort of thing? I know that concealable handcuff keys have been around for a while, so I can only assume that somewhere or other there is a genuine need. I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this.

I don't think anything in that kit is included as a gimmick or selling point.

I have a lot of articles from The Locksmith Ledger from the 1960s when they ran a series of articles on handcuffs and how to pick them, shim them, service them and force them open in some cases. That lowly bobby pin is one of the tools recommended even by the old time Locksmiths. :)

Be prepared for a fit with some cuffs. It's not as easy as you think. Houdini once said the best pick was a hidden key, in this case, he is really correct.

When I was in high school I used to have massive amounts of fun locking myself to various things and working my way out. :o Them were the days.

Bobby pins work great, especially when you can't reach the key hole and have to rely on a shim. I think that including this key is a good part of the kit.

In The Third World, you might get away with single locked handcuffs. In the rest of the indistrialized nations, you won't be shimming your way out of the problem because they will be double locked. You can't shim cuffs that are double locked, you have to pick the double lock off and then you can either pick the primary or shim the primary.

Very true. :)

That's true but most double locks can be defeated by hitting both cuffs on a table or something (two simultaneous hammer fists). Another way is if you are in a car use the male end of a seat belt and use it near the rivet the pry them apart.
