Ray Laconico and Mark Wohlwend joint project knife

This is to cool looking. Looks like the Canadian Belt Knife and one of Koster's Nessie's got together and had a bastard child. Really like the continuous curve on that blade edge, if it was wide enough it could be used as a Ulu.

I don't own a Canadian Belt Knife but I do have a Koster Nessie which I love apart from the narrow handle slabs ( Which Dan has now corrected on his recent models ), so maybe I did include a little of that design without even realising !!!

Here is my design (bolding plagiarizing some of Ray’s design clues):

I call it the “Woodcrafter”, …or better yet “BigAss Bushcrafter”.

12” overall, with a 5 3/8” handle and a 6 5/8” blade that measures just over 1 1/2“ from spine to edge at the bottom of the belly.

I would think about using 3/16” stock, I might make a version in A2.

Designed as a general purpose camp knife with a nod toward bushcraft designs.

I think it would be just my kind of Bushcrafter.

Big Mike

”Scaring the tree huggers.”

That's a great looking design Mike !

Nice one Pit... looks fantastic and very useful.

Big Mike, Very cool! Nice lines.

Here is my final one. I figured this would be more of an every day hiking knife or one to carry when hitting a trail and wanting to keep the weight down a little but when you still need enough knife to 'get her done !'

really like the look of pitdogs design, looks like you could use it as a shovel one minute then the next to slice up some veges.

the Off Trail- you've spent years refining your kit, you count ounces, what isn't needed is left behind, but every item remaining has to be tough and every item has to work!

you spend as much time off trail as on- you need a knife that can make short work of high lake trout or mountain grouse, you need a knife that can handle wood chores as your stove doesn't use conventional fuels- it uses nature's, you need a knife that can be counted on when the chips are down- a no frills, all business knife- that's the Off Trail :)

3/32 stock, hollow pins, thin scales

the drawing is a little rough, but I'm sure Ray and Mark can fix that :D

liking the idea of that off trail mtwarden light and tough, forgive my metricness but is 3/32 around 2 mm ?

Still liking your Booshway design Pit, not so sure on the LBG reminds me of a Doug Ritter RSK Mk3 ! I also like the idea of mtwardens Off Trail, would be a handy stash knife !

Did we find out yet if the winner gets a free version of their design ?

Still trying to draw something but I suck on paper !!!!

Geez pitdog. I really like the Booshway and the LBG design. Some of the other designs are really good also like big Mikes, and yes even the windingo. Great description of it ms3902. I saw a strong Nessie look but didn't notice the Canadian belt knife look and possible Ulu use until you mentioned it.

My top two picks would be the Booshway or the LBG I don't know which one I'd like better without seeing them in the steel. ;):D Speaking of that, what type of steel. O1 or 1095 or something else?

I think ya can't go far wrong with good old 1095 !;)

These are great guys. Keep them coming. The more designs the better it will be.

I have to talk to Mark about whether the winner gets a free one. I'm not sure if we're making more than one. I guess it depends if people want to order them, then we can make a limited run or something. Also, I'm not yet sure if we're picking the winner of if you guys pick the winner. I think we'll talk about it and decide by the end of this week.

Thanks all!

Sounds cool ! Thanks for the contest Ray !

2.4 mm :)

I think that would be a very nice thickness for what this knife is intended for- something light and fast, but still very capable

I'd add that the design is borrowed heavily upon from several of Ray's own designs, but I noticed that Ray doesn't have a lot of smaller knives in his lineup- this would be a great knife to piggyback w/ one of his larger knives when weight isn't a large factor on deciding what knife (or in this case knives) to bring- use this knife for finer work- field dressing, fuzz sticks/tinder, trap notching, etc- the larger for heavier tasks- batoning, chopping, etc

Heres mine.... Forgive the shitty drawing....

I envision a mini Hudson Bay style knife. 5in blade, 4.5in handle, 1.5in tall.....

The handle is a coffin style handle with etched steel guard. Some dark ironwood or walnut for the handles.

Guards similar to this Bowie by Ray, just not protruding....

I based this design after owning several blades from Mark and Ray, and getting to see several of Marks designs in person. With Marks flair for "old world" style and craftsmenship, and Rays attention to detail, and fantastic coffin handles, I think they could really knock this one out of the park.

Its your colab.....I think you 2 should choose the design youd like to work together, rather then let others choose for you. At least for the first colab. Just my opinion....

Better than my drawing attempts !

I could really imagine this one in the flesh ( steel ), it would be a real cool knife, that's for sure !

I still think the Booshway screams survival knife but I'd be happy with any of the designs entered !

Best of luck trying to pick a winner !!!!

Here is another one that I had a go at. This one is based off an Indonesian jungle knife. I think that they come in various sizes but id envisage this one with 12" blade, convex ground.
