the periodic washing ritual, soaking in coconut water and rubbing with lime juice to remove any rust and the old arsenic blackening, then re-soaking/etching in the lime juice/arsenic mixture to blacken the softer iron, highlighting the nickel rich areas does remove metal and eventually roughen & weaken the blade and over a long time, eat holes in the blades, especially the thinner areas of the fullers. this is accepted as part of the mistique and reverence for the older magic blades. in essence 'holey is holy'.
