That's a beautiful hanger! Interesting that it was made in the early 1900s, weren't hangers unfashionable in Europe and the U.S. By then?

hunting swords and daggers ere in use well into the 20th c. in europe, especially in germany & austrian empires. they were less used in naval forces, but cutlass & klewangs still were used in ww2. the ones made in the indies like my new one were popular for europeans to take home after using similar ones while there... there were and stiull are pitrates.

around the turn of the century, we not only had the moro wars (who used swords) but the dutch had wars with the local insurgents in the dutch west indies. they found that the locals with their klewangs and muskets were winning against the local native police with western swords and more modern weapons. he commisioned a bunch of shorter swords, initially made in solingen, then in the dutch town of hembrug. they were successful. so much so that the USA licensed the design and milsco made exact copies that were used by the us military in ww2, issued to marines and navy personnel. the germans even used some they captured n the netherlands. the japs captured a number in the east & shortened them further and cut back the guard, they were known as heiho sabres.

my dutch klewang, one of the earlier solingen ones (in a later scabbard)

cold steel makes one they call the 1917 cutlass, which is a different beast entirely. it is a copy of the milsco copy of the dutch 1911 hembrug klewang which is a copy of the solingen one like mine. cutlass issue, drills were cut out by the navy after ww2, but recently revived. the usn now use a copy of the 1862 naval cutlass, not the 1917 one. or the 1911 dutchy.

mine was captured in the english channel from a german schnell boat where they were being used as cutlasses.

Well now ain't that the coolest thing. That is way cool. Made for each other it appears like.

He's probably Hanuman, a Hindu monkey God. The Indonesian/Malay version of Hanuman, a Hindu monkey God. He's a bit different than the Indian version. For instance the Indian version was celibate but the Indonesian version married a mermaid. I have to do more research.

I've proposed to at least a half dozen mermaids myself, turned me down flat everytime. I never was much for getting wet. I think they can sense that.

i never saw the attraction of mermaids whose bottom halves were fish. limits the possibilities. especially with them sharp scales, you don't want to rub her the wrong way.

p.s.- love the hanuman. perfect holder for the keris. you do know they come alive at night when you are asleep and get up to mischief.

Ain't nothin wrong with their mouths though... Lol

Thanks! He does have to be the ugliest, crudest, and most grotesque Hanuman statue I've ever seen. But that's why I like it. It's interesting how different the depictions of Hanuman in India are to those in Thailand or Indonesia. In the Indian version he's superhuman (he can fly and carry mountains), abstinent, and without any moral flaws. In the SE Asian versions he's more of a troublemaker and he nails mermaids.

Supposedly Hanuman is immortal (but he ages), so if you see a monkey man who looks several thousand years old that's probably him.

What, so you just hollered your proposals at them from the dock? I'm surprised none of them took you up on it!

that was one of the possibilities i mentioned. :) 69 wouldn't be as much fun unless you like shashimi...

anyway mermaids are well known for their teeth!

Looks like a match! Good job! PM me when you get ready:thumbup:
Ha! I forgot. your a vintage audio nut right? I was trying to figure out what that is. Looks like an old Panasonic receiver maybe?

Wow, I really love Kron's new addition. It is funny but to me it almost looks more homemade than something from a swordmaker? maybe I am just seeing things but it looks like the lines in the fullers waver? And the edge in some pics doesn't seem completely straight. But no matter what it sure does have style. I love it.

Blue, that is starting to look like it is coming together. Once you get the Gonjo cut for it, it is going to be really nice. Can't wait to see what you and KamiDog work out for it.

yes, hand-made imperfections make it art and add soul. machine perfection is functional but soul-less and missing something - life.
i know there is not another like this. similar maybe but like us, individuals. it's our differences we celebrate, the same-nesses we take for granted.
bit like HI stuff, all slightly breaking the mould.

(p.s. - it arrived in customs wed. hope it clears next week)

never heard my wife tell it ;)

there was a mermaid behind every tree in the aleutians tho.
Maybe she isn't old or she knows you wouldn't go with any of them mermaids anyways?
Aleutians, I know where there are but besides mermaids is there anything interesting?

some spectacular coastlines, cliffs, etc. fishing. few small native villages, the odd scientific expedition or two, seals, birds (the feathered kind). dutch harbour, attu, kiska have some japanese stuff in caves - still booby trapped, mined and off limits, volcanoes.

as you can see, it's hard to count the trees in the forests there.

mostly since there aren't any. at all. none.

... and the available single women (and mermaid) count is essentially zero.

couple horny lady elephant seals gave us the eye tho.
