Mekugi pins are tea treated quality bamboo pins used to secure the tang of a Japanese sword to the handle.

I was incredulous when I first realized that but it seems to work, especially if the handle is made to fit snugly to the tang for an exact fit plus wood shims and other craftsmans tricks.

The sword in fact came back to me with a shorter and thinner handle as requested and they made it tight and snug, no more play or rattling so I will not be taking it apart anytime soon.

I will post pictures of the blade later. I do need to put a layer of choji before I put it away in storage.

Ok, I don't got none of them Mekugi Pins. I'll check for a bottle of choji.

I might have finished that off Saturday night, who can remember.

ebay has a zillion of them for sale, you have to cut them down to fit tho. or get your panda to chew the extra bit off.

Careful with all of this panda talk. Before we know it Bawanna may have actually gotten his hands on a panda, with hilarity to ensure shortly thereafter.

I hear they require a lot of fiber in their diet. I hear about myself needing a lot of fiber in my diet, probably more about fiber than I really need to deal with.

bawanna needs fibre in his diet. pandas need fibre in their diets.

logically, BAWANNA IS A PANDA!

it all fits.

it all fits.

*Look of dawning realization*

He's right!

On a more serious note, here's my latest acquisition.

It's a Cold Steel MAA Messer. I wasn't planning on getting it, but it happened. I also wasn't really planning on buying from Cold Steel for a few reasons, but here I am with it.

It handles really well, very smooth and responsive, and it cuts quite easily. I spent some time with water bottles, and it cut through them so easily that most of the time I couldn't even feel the water bottles as it went through. At one point I even cut a large bottle without knocking it from its precarious stand, then I thrust into what remained. It thrust cleanly through without knocking it over, and I pulled it out again without knocking it over. Then I noticed that despite there still being water in what remained of the bottle, none of it was leaking through the holes left by the thrust. It went through so cleanly that the plastic walls sealed themselves back up. I had to tip the remains of the bottle before water started leaking through the holes. So I am impressed with this short sword. Only negatives I've found is that the scabbard doesn't have a frog or loops or any provision for carry, and the decorative lines on the nagel (the shell guarding the knuckles) are kind of poorly executed.

that messer looks like a cool knife.not too fond of the black blades on their 'men at arms' models. i'd be tempted to clean the blade.

probably needs a hanger like on my dussack

the buckled straps hold the scabbard quite tightly, tho the scabbard does have a clip to help.
it hangs almost horizontally, and has an extra strap that oddly runs along your front to elevate the grip a bit.
it's a german style hang. had a baldric made for a falchion, it's scabbard is like yours, the laced leather section holds the scabbard even without a clip, the wide straps at the top go on up over your shoulder, nice adjusting buckle that lies on your chest. the black laced section towards the top is for a schiavona basket hilt full length sword baldric, so it's a bit longer to hold it correctly.

The blade looks black in photos, but it's actually been blued then polished. Hold it right and you can see yourself in it. When I have more time, mind if I pick your brain to get a good carry setup? I like what you've shown me, and think I'll try it when I get more funds.

Also, I've wanted to see a metal dussack before. Thanks for posting it.

more dussack/dussage porn: for the other lutherans here, martin luther had a dussack in his house, which is now a museum.

you're probably thinking of the wooden sparring ones that you see in old drawings.

they also come in metal (see the 1st drawing above, it also has a similar grip area)

the other side of my lutel one's grip:

lutel also make a less expensive 'village' model for the peasants: aka the tesak or tusk

Blade pics finally. This was originally a completely stock Hanwei Tori XL Lite katana.

For a production sword it has a real yokote and we do see a degree of folding activity in the Swedish powder steel.

new toy: Moro Barung

15.5 in. blade, 25 in. in scabbard, cast bronze ringed bolster, 675 grams out of scabbard, hardened insert in the edge.

had to drive 75 miles x 2 to pick it up today as the auction house wouldn't pack & ship it.

i was the only bidder so i got it cheapish.

cost me an addition 3 hrs. of my time & £5.00 in diesel. cheaper than a courier.
